DRAWING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 29,. 1918; Serial No. 260,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, OSCAR E. CHANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for pro ducing designs, and the object is to provide a machine which in its simplest form constitutes an educational toy, and which in a more complete or complicated form serves as a device for making designs for various decorative purposes.
A further object is to provide a device comprising a rotating element on which the drawing paper is to be placed, a pencil holding or guiding bar, means for pivotally mounting one end of the bar, and means for imparting to the other end thereof movement in various directions for guiding the pencil over the paper to produce designs of various types.
A still further object is to provide for the holding and guiding of the pencil at various points along the bar, to provide for varylng the movement of either end of the bar, to provide for the movement of both ends of the bar in such manner that they shall be moved in variable paths for. pro ducing designs of special character.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Fig. 4 is a detail of a sheet of cardboard or the like carried by the rotatable table, and serving to support the sheet on which the design is to be made.
The operative elements of the device are mounted on a base 10, the central portion of the base carrying a rotatable table 12, pivotally mounted at 13. This table is driven by means of a belt 14, passing around vtheel 15, the edge of the table and the wheel being provided with grooves in the edges thereof.
Wheel 15, may if desired, include a plurality of grooves 16, 17 and 18 of different diameter, in order to vary the speed of the table 12. A pencil guiding baris designated 2O andis providedwith a plurality of apertures 21through which a pencil may be passed and retained in position to be guided over a sheet of paper placed on a sheet of cardboard or other suitable material 8 carried by the rotating table 12. One end of bar 20 is provided with an Patented June 24, 1919.
aperture 22 through which one element of a crank 23 passes, this crank beingiconnected with wheel 15 by means of any suitable device 2-1 which may be adjusted toward and away from the center of the wheel.
The paper on which the designs are to be drawn may be secured to the cardboard by means of ordinary paper clips, the edges of the cardboard extending beyond the edges of the wheel. 1
One end of bar 20 is provided with an extension which may be in the form of a metallic rod and is designated 28. This rod passes through an eye 29 in the end of a pin 30. A series oi. holes 31 are provided in transverse bar 32, so that pin 30 may he placed in any desired position on the bar. Another series of apertures 35 is provided in bar 32 and these apertures last named extend horizontally and accommodate horizontal pin 35. A resilient device 36 connects bar 28 and the pin 35, the latter be ing placed in a convenient aperture, depending upon the position of the pin 30 at a given time. i i
This device may be termed a geoinegraph, and as previously stated, is suitable for use as a means of entertainment and in drawing designs of a more elaborate character for decorative purposes.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, base, a rotatable table mounted thereon, pulley mounted at one side of the table, belt connecting the table with the pulley, a pencil guiding bar provided with apertures, a crank element connected with the pulley and operatively connected with the bar, an adjustable device for mounting the opposite end of the bar and comprising an element provided With a series of apertures eX- tending in one direction and a series of apertures extending at an angle therewith, a pin for engaging the apertures of the first series, a pin for engaging the apertures of the second series, the pin first named carrying a uiding through the guiding element for control ling the movement of the pencil guiding bar and a resilient device passing around said means and retained by the-second named pin, in an adjusted position corresponding with the location of the pin first named.
2. In axdevi'ce of the' cla'ss'described, a 1'0- tatable table, a pulley mounted atone side thereof, a belt for driving the table from the pulley, a ipencil guiding bar extending across the table, a crank element adjustably connected With the pulley, and pivotelly connected with the bar at a point out of alinement with the connection with the pulley, and means for adjust-ably mounting the other end of the pencil guiding bar.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
OSCAR E. CHANEY.
