Description
L. D. BELNAP.
Improvement in Carriage-Seat Fasteners.
No. 130,785. Patented Aug. 2 7, 187-21 Wizzewaew I I UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIOE.
LESTER D. BELNAP, OF J ONESVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR TO MARCUS BROGKWAY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SEAT FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,785, dated August 27, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, LESTER D. BELNAP, of Jonesville, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage Seat Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the follb wing is a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fastener for securing seats to carriages and wagons, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and a use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my fastener. u
A represents one of the side or end pieces under theseat proper, to which my fastener is attached on the inner side. B is the bed-plate of the fasten er, attached by screws to the piece A. 'To the plate is attached a bar, a, provided on its outer side with a square head, I), and over the bar or shank a slides a vertically-slotted plate, 0. This plate 0 is slotted from the lower end upward for a suitable distance, and is of such thickness as to fit between the bedplate A and the head I). On the upper end of the plate 0 is an upward-projecting pin, upon which is placed'a lever, D, held by a nut, 01, screwed on the end of said pin. The hub, or that part of the lever which is placed on this pin, is provided with a screw-thread, e, working in a slot, f, in the bed-plate A, so that by turning the leverfrom one side to the other the plate 0 is either raised or lowered, as the case may be. sliding plate 0 is pivoted a hook, G, which is to drop under the rib of the carriage side, on the inside, and tightened by the turning of the lever from one side to the other. In the inner corner of the hook Gr is made a notch, i, to receive the edge of the iron plate, often placed on the rib for strengthening the same, and projecting below the rib. Thus, when the seat is tightened up the notch 13 will draw up tightly to said iron strip on the rib and the balance of the hook press against the under side of the wood, making it very secure. At the lower end of the hook G is a thumb-piece, h, for turning the hook when the fastening isloosened.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The lever D, pivoted upon a projecting pin on the sliding plate (hand provided. with screw-thread 0 working on the inclined slot f on the bed-plate B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bed-plate B, having inclined notch f and bar a, with head b, the slotted plate 0, lever D with screw 6, and the hook G with notch i and thumb-piece h, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LESTER D. BELNAP.
