Tc'all wil/0m it may concern l Be it known that I,`HARRie`J. SHELTON, residing in the city of St. Louis and the State of Missouri, have invented aiew and useful Improvement in Grinders and 'Shredders, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to a machine that may be, used for grinding free flowing material, such as'peas, beans, or similar articles, or for shredding fibrous material, such as alfalfa, hay, pea vines, and similar substances.
rllhe object of my invention is to provide a .single machine which can be used for grinding free iiowing material, such as peas, or which by a slight adjustment may be used for shredding fibrous material, such as alfalfa; and a further object of my invention is to provide a machine that is especially adapted to the needs of farmers, in that there will be combined in a single device, a' grinder for free flowing material and a shredder for fibrous material.

. Referring to the figures, A is a housing orlcasing having mounted inside of it a lura it be made to rotate by means of the shaft C. D is a grinding surface which occupies the greater part of the upper half of the casing, and E is a screen 'through which the ground or shredded material passes from the grinding chamber into the space below and from of hammers B which are adapte to which space it is withdrawn by any suit able means. G is a feed mechanism by lmeans of which fibrous material, such as ea vines, alfalfa,
etc., are fed to the mac ine through the channel betweenthe walls J and K when it is used as a shredder. H and I represent belt conveyers in the feed mechanism G.
inasmuch as the kind of feed mechanism used-for supplying the fibrous material to the machinewlien itis used as a shredder does not form a part of my invention, I have not shown the feed mechanism complete, and I do not intend that my inven- ,tion shall be restricted to use with a feed mechanism precisely like that 'shown in the drawin An inlet opening is formed in the circum erential'wall of the grindin chainber, and to this leads the supply uct for free iiowingmaterial and the channel from the feed mechanism for fibrous material. The gate L is preferably provided with teeth M so that its inner surface forms a grinding surface, and it is arranged to slide in grooves P eut in theside walls of the housing A between the end of the section of the grinding surface D and the end of the screen E. N is a set screw which passes through one side wall of the housing and which is adapted to hold the gate L in adjusted position. When the gate Lis in raised position as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the supply' duct F is cut off from the grinding chamber and material may be fed into the machine through the feed channel from the feed mechanism G, and the machine acts as a shredder. VVhen'the gate is in lowered position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, communi cation between the feedmechanism, G and the grinding chamber is closed and fibrous material cannot be fed to the machine, but

It is evident that the sizes of the various parts may be varied to suit the different conditions, and the means used for holdin the gateJ L in raised position may be changed without departing rfrom the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A grinding and shredding machine havi `"ingas housing containing a grinding chamber witlirevoluble hammers mounted therein, a grindingsurface-forming the upper circumferential wall of said fchamben and ymade in two sections, one of said sections-- j ing therethrough and a section of said surface adjustably mounted in said opening, a
supply duct for free flowing material, a feed duct and said feed channel both leading to said inlet opening and said adjustable section of said grindmg surface being shiftable from one of the feed openings to the other.
3. A grinding and shredding machine having a housing containing a grinding chamber with revoluble hammers mounted therein,v a screen forming the lower circumferential wall of said chamber, an imperforate grinding surface forming the upper circumferential wall of said chamber and positioned so as to abut at one end against one end of said screen and leave an inlet opening between the non-abutting ends of said surface and said screen, an imperforate section of grinding surface adjustably mounted in said opening, a supply duct for free flowing material, a feed channel for fibrous material, said supply duct and said feed channel both leading to said inlet opening and said adjustable section of grinding surface being shiftable from one of the feed openings to the other.
4. A grinding and shredding machine comprising a housing having a chamber with revoluble hammers mounted therein, a
screen forming the lower half 'of the cirfcunferentlalwall. 0f sa1d chamber, an 1mpel` circumferential wall ofsaid chamber and made in two sections, one of said sections being fixed in position and abutting at one end against one end of said screen and the other of said sections being adjustable circumferentially between said fixed section and said screen, a supply duct whereby free flowing material may be fed into said chamber having one wall registering with the non-abutting end of said fixed, section of said grinding surface, a feed channel for fibrous material having one wall registering with the non-abutting end of said screen, a wall common to said supply duct and said feed channel, and means whereby said adjustable section of said grinding surface maybe held in position at either side of said common wall thereby preventing the feeding of material into said chamber at that side of said wall at which said section is positioned.
