Abstract

27,162. Marks, E. C. R., [Blake Crusher and Pulverizer Co.]. Nov. 25. Impact pulverizers.-In apparatus for pulverizing fuel &c., in which the material is delivered from a hopper E, Figs. 1 and 2, to a pulverizer A by a rotating member D mounted within a cylindrical casing C and provided with blades or paddles 19 to effect a preliminary crushing of the material, the member D is tapered towards its receiving-end, and the radial length of the blades 19 is reduced in the direction of the taper of the member. The inner end of the member D is journaled in a depending strap or bracket 11 in the casing C and carries a spiral feeding-worm 20, while the outer end protrudes through the end of the casing and carries a sprocket-wheel 12 driven by a chain from a shaft 13, which is driven by a belt 18 from the driving-shaft B. The throat 21 of the hopper is preferably rectangular in cross-section, and its walls parallel to the member D are each provided with a ledge 22 which curves upwardly towards the rear wall of the throat. The feed shutter 23 is connected at its upper end to a slide 26, which can be moved up or down in grooves 25 on the walls of the throat 21 and is arched at its lower end to correspond with the member D, the lower corners being arched out to engage the ledges 22. The slide 26 is operated by means of a link 28 and rocking-lever 29, which is mounted on a shaft 32 carrying a damper 33 in the air-duct F, so that the supply of air to the pulverizer is controlled simultaneously with the feed of fuel, the damper being adjustable on the shaft 32 so that the ratio of air to fuel can be varied. The inlet port 31 at the outer end of the duct F is preferably screened. A downwardly swing- ing door 36 in the bottom of the chamber C allows any foreign object to be removed before it is carried into the pulverizer. The pulverizer is provided with radial paddles 5 working within one or more chambers 1, 2, 3, and with a fan working within the end chamber 4. The end elements 39, 40 have annular lips 41, 42 bolted to the central drum 43, and the annular partitions between the pulverizing-chambers are composed of pairs of abutting plates 45 secured to the drum by means of eye-bolts engaging pins extending through the plates. Lateral extensions or flanges formed by T-plates G bolted between the inner ends of the plates 45 and L-plates H bolted between the inner walls of the members 39, 40 and the ends of the drum keep the particles of fuel in the paths of the beaters 5. The removable lining-plates 48 are held in place by means of notches 49 on the outer edges of the plates 45. The pulverizer is formed in two semi-cylindrical parts hinged together in the horizontal plane of the axis of the shaft B, so that its interior can be readily exposed for access when required.
