FOLDABLE Box.
i `Speefication of Letters Patent.
` Patented June 24, 1919.
Application filed November 1G, 1918.` Serial No. 262,838.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Visana zo Rusennzo, a subject of the King of Italy, residlnoat l/Vendel, in the county of Taylor and tats of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Foldable Boxes, of which the following is a speciiicatioi'i.`
lThe primary object of the inventionis the provision of a box formed of any suitable material and capable of folding in compact relation when not in use, readily set up in box formation when desired and` forming a box of great strength.` p
A further object of the invention islto provide a box possessing great strength and durability capable of being compactly `fold- `ed and being formed of any desirable material and in any suitable size.
W'ith these general objects in view and others that will appeai` as the nature of the invention is better understood the same will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing in which i like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, i i
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the boxset up for use partially broken away.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken upon line III-1II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4l is an end view of the box in its knocked-down folded arrangement.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view taken upon line V--V of` Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the box folded and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of an end portion with the box broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be noted that my box is illustrated `as being formed of wood and is rectangular in cross section, being somewhat longer than it is wide. Equal sized substantially squared ends 10 and 11 areconnected by hinges 12 to the opposite ends of the bottom 13 of the box. The adjacent edges 14C and 15 of the said ends and bottom are correspondingly beveled permitting said edges to flatly contact each other when the ends 10 and 11 are v positioned perpendicular to the bottom 13 when the box is set up for use, it being understood that the ends are readily folded in wardly for lying flatly upon the bottom 13 by means of the hinges 12.
An upwardly projecting flange 16 is provided u-pon the forward edge of the bottom 13 of a height equal to the thickness ofthe ends 10 and 11, while an upwardly extending ledge 17 is provided upon the rearedge of the bottom 13 of substantially twice the height of the flange 16.`
H `Bythis arrangement, -tlieends 10 and 11 will lock between said ange 16 and ledge 17 when the endsare folded upon the bottom 13, such ends lying flush with the top of the flange 16 and permitting the front side 18 of the box which is hinged as at 19 to the flange 16to befolded inwardly upon the ends 10 and `11 fiush with the top of the ledge 17.
The rear side 20 of the box is connected by hinges 21 :5to the top of the ledge` 17 and is positioned inwardly above the `frontlside 18 when the box is folded. f
` The top of the box consists of a rib 22 con- .nected` by hinges 23 with `the top of the rear' wall or back 2O of the box and a lid 24E attached by hinges 25 to the forwardedge of `said rib 22. When the box is set up for use `with the `ends 1() and` 11 at right angles to the bottom 13 between the flange 16 and lug 17, it will be seen that the ends are also positioned between the front side 18 and back side 2O of the box thereby holding the said sides in box formation. l
The rib 22 and the lid 24 are provided `with marginal grooves 26 and `27respectively adapted for receiving the upper edges of the ends 10 and 11 and the frontside 18 of the box when the box is closed which impartsgreat strength and rigidity to the box structure as the lid and rib lock the sides and ends of thebox together. The lid 24;
l may be swuno to its open position upon the hinges 25 witliout disturbing the closed posi tion of the rib 22. i
i `W'hen the back 20 ofthe box is folded inwardly above the front side` 18 thereof as `heretofore described, the lid 22 may be also `folded so as to lie upon the front side 18,
. permitting` the lid 211 .to be swung rearwardly upon its hinges 25 overlying the rib 22 and rear wall 201` as illustrated in Figs. aand 6 of the drawings. A hasp 28 is attached to the forward edge of the lid 24- adapted for engaging over a staple 29 proj ecting from the front side 18 and permitting the insertion of a padlock 30 in said staplefor locking the box closed when desired. When the box is folded, the hasp 28 is engaged by a hook 31 carried by the ledge 17 while a similar hook 32 carried by the flange 16 engages an eye 33 upon the adjavided in the inner edge of the lid 211 for accommodating the eye 33 when the box is closed as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawing.` The'staple 29 is accommodated 'within a recess 35 in the inner face of the rear side 2O and whereby the side .20 is supported suitably spaced from the front side 18 when the bo'xf is fol'ded *to* accommodate the greater th''eknessfof the rib 22.
Byrel'easing-the `hasp 28 the lid 241 Vmay be readily opened andthe rib 22 swung upon its hinges 23 so that the ends 1l will be released for folding inwardly up'on'the bottom 13. The front side 18"is then folded inwardly uponthe'- ends the back-20 folded upon the `front 18Y with the rib 22 and lid 21fpositioned as heretofore noted, permitting: the vhooks -31andf'32- to belengaged with the hasp 28 'and eye 33 respectively, securing the box in its f knocked-down folded arrangement. The b'o'x is then readily transported and readilysetup for use by unfolding and'positioningthe Ipants `thereof in the manner described. p
Whati I claim "as new is 1'. A box* comprising a bottom having a front flahgeand arear ledge mounted thereon, afrontand arear side for the box hinged for inwa'rd folding respectively upon said flange'and'ledgaends hinged upon the ends of said bott'om'normally positioned between said sides' adapted for inward' folding between the'said'flange' and ledge, a rib hinged to theft'op df said rear side having marginal grooves overlying the upper edges of saidl endswhen the box. is' set up for use, a lid hinged 'to' the forward edge of said' rib having' marginal grooves4 overlyingthe upper edges of the ends andthe other side'of thei box when closed,A and retaining means connected between said ledge and' lid and between said flange and rib when thebox is `in its knocke'dldown folded position.
v 2. box cohiprisingia bottom having a front iiange and arear ledge mounted thereon, a front and arear side for the box hing'f'ed for'inwar'd flding respectively upon l said flange'and ledge, ends hinged upon the ends'ofsaid bottom nori'nall'yvv positioned between said sides adapted for inward folding betwe'en the said flange and ledge, a rib hinged to the top of said rear side having marginal grooves' overlying the upper edges of said ends when the box is set up for use, a lid hinged to the forward edge of said rib having marginal grooves overlying the upper edges of the ends and the other side of the box when closed, a hasp upon the forward edge of said lid, a staple upon said front side adapted for connection with said hasp when the box is closed, the said rear side having a recess in its inner face adapted for receiving said staple when the box is folded, and a hook upon said ledge engaged with said hasp when the box is folded, adapted for retaining the box in its folded position with said staple lin the recess and said rear side spaced from the front side with the folded rib seated upon the. front sideof the box.
3. A box comprising a'bottom having a front flange and a rear ledge mounted thereon, a front and a rear side for the box hinged for inward folding respectively upon said flange and ledge, ends hinged upon the ends of said bottom normally positioned between said sides adapted for inward folding between the said flange and ledge, a rib hinged to the top of said rear side having marginal grooves overlying the upper edges of said ends when the box is set up for use, a lid hinged to the forwardedge of said rib havingl marginal grooves'overlying the upper edges of the ends and the other side of the box when closed, a hasp upon the forward edge of said lid, a staple upon said front side adapted for connectionwith said hasp when the box is closed, the said rear side having a recess in its inner face adapted for receiving said staple when the box is folded,
a hook upon said ledge engaged with said hasp when the box is folded, adapted for retaining the box in its folded position with said staple in the recess and said rear side spaced from the front side with the folded rib seated upon the front side of the box, an e'ye upon the inner face of said rib, the said lid having an adjacently positioned notch adapted for accommodating said eye when the box is closed, and a hook upon said flange adapted for engaging the eye upon rthey box being folded.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
