To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WIGG, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at #104 Park avenue, Mitcham, in the county of Surrey, London, E. C., England, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Typographic Composing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the acy signal controls 1n the castlngmachine the` companying drawings,Y forming part of this specification, and to the characters of reference marked thereon. j
This invention relates to machines fo-r composing or preparing patterns, recordstrips or controllers, such as are employed to control the action of automatic type-casting and composing machines, each unit,` character, symbol, or justication fraction being set up or represented in the record-strip by one or more signal components or perforations through the instrumentality of key controlled punches or signal producing devices.
It has been usual, hitherto, to compose the line of matter so that when being cast the fractions necessary to justify the line have been added to certain predetermined s aces or space type-bodies which are varia le in set-Wise measurement for justication purposes, as, for example, with the invention according to the U. S. patent to J. Sellers Bancroft and Mauritz C. Indahl, No.` 944,405, dated December 28th, 1909, but it has also been proposed, for example, according to the invention of the U. S. patent to the above inventors `No. 1,094,630, dated April 28th, 1914, and of the pending application of Ernest Edward Sumner, S. l. #139,628 filed December 29th, 1916, toyadd the justification fraction for a line to the type bodies, that is to say, to bodies of predetermined and fixed point sizes such .as characters, points, quads, etc., as distinguished from space type bodies and 1t is to machines so equipped that the present invention more particularly refers. y
The signals for type are in general composed of two components, one denoting or indicating position, `the other position and dimensions, since in addition to determining in the Casting machine the position of the dieor matrix, it also controls the dimension-k `mg ofthe mold for the designatedmatrix, I and theslgnal member or punch for producing this component is coupled with the linemeasuring mechanism to effect the recording on the line measure of the unit value of each type; these components will be referred to hereinafter as positioning and dimensioning components respectively.
The dimensioning component `of a space setting or positioning of the normal `molddimensioningmechanism as in the case of a type while the other component of the space signal controls the adjustment of a transfer value of the normal molddimensioning mechanism `when combined with a supplementary or justification molddimensioning mechanism as is the case when spaces are being cast, and the punchin the composing mechanism which effects a change in the` machine which produces the transfer cor"nl ponent is coupled with mechanism whereby the line-measuring mechanism registers the `unit value of the unjustified space at a fixed amount.
`'The signals for the justification fraction for the composed line are formed at the end of the line and each comprises two components. As, however, in the organized castingmachine the record-strip is passed therethrough in the order reverse to composition, the justication signals are presented at the record-strip interpreting mechanism of the casting machine before the signals denoting type and spaces.
These justification signals function in the casting machine to` effect the adjustment or setting of the supplementary mold-dimen- 'sioning mechanism which is only rendered In accordance with the invention described in Patent #1,094,630 and application #139,628, above mentioned, improved mechanism is provided for coupling at will the transfer component of the space signal c with the type signals and lfor cutting out the y unit registering or measuring mechanism of the space signal, so that the unit value of the type signal will 'be registered; thus the s ignal, when being interpreted in the casting machine, will effect the setting of the normal `mold-dimensioning devices and will also effect the cooperation therewith for dimensioning the mold for the designated type,
,ofthe supplementary or justifica-tion molddimensioning devices.
The addition of this transfer component to the type signal so that in the casting machine the mold is` dimensioned bythe conjoint action of the normal and supplementary orjustiiication mold-dimensioning device diminishes the indicated value of the designa-.ted type by two units, ya deficiency which must lbe' subsequently made up and applied through the medium' of the justification signal which is increased in value to the eXtent of two units of the setfor each of` thev type signals to which the transfer component has been applied. It is the object of the present invention to eliminate the necessity of thus increasing the value of the justification signal by providing a devieesfor advancing the Zero position of the line measuring mechanism, as will hereinafter appear, as the result of which the value oftype signals designated in company with the aforesaid transfer component are registered by the line-measuring mechanism two units less in value than their normal dimensions, and further this device is operatively coupled with. and is operated simultaneously with the mechanism for coupling the transfer component with the type signals. By this. means the correct justification fraction is shown on the justication indicator drum and all calculation by the operator and lia'bility to error are eliminated.

The composing machine to which the invention is herein shown applied and in connection with which it will be herein described is that of Patent t9-14,1105, previously referred to, to the specification of which attention is directed for a full and complete description of the machine, it being sufficient for present purposes to designate in general only those parts thereof with which the mechanism of the present invention is more intimately related,
. for example, (employing the same reference numerals as those of the patent,) the keys 180 piieumatically operating the punch bar motor pistons 29, connected with the punch bar levers 17 and punch bars 15, (the punch bar shown in Fig. 1 'being that of the transfer or space punch); the line measuring mechanism including the stop bars 13 on the outer ends of levers each operated from a dimensioning punch bar 15 through a levei 2O and a vertically movable bar 40; the units rack 11 slidable in the units rack carrier 42 operated from the universal bai' 19, the latter being connected by arms with the shaft 34 and by the arm 35 and link 3G with the return motor piston 37 the units wheel 7 and the line scale rack 14; the justification indicating mechanism identified by the indicator drum 8 and the space counter or pointer 14X, the latter being carried by the vertical ratchet bar driven upwardly by pawl and ratchet means including the operatinof arm 91 and allowed to fall when desired I y a suitably operated trip; the cushioning zero stop for the units rack comprising the bars 44 and 45.
The mechanismshown herein for coupling the transfer signal producing member with type signal producing member is similar to that disclosed in the Sumner application liereinbefore mentioiicd in accordance with which there is pivotally supported in a. bracket 71 (Fig. 2) secured to the machine frame, a lever 81 one end of which 'by a pin and slot connection is coupled with the transfer punch bar 15. vTo the other end of the lever 81 is pivotally connected, at a point intermediate its ends, a bar or rod 9. At its lower end the rod 9 is formed with a hook or slot 10, which when the rod is turned on its pivot 12 engages a pin 16 on the arm 35 of the universal bar 19 as shown in full lines in 'Fig'. 1. In this position, when a key is operated to lactuate the punches for a 'type signal, the universal bar 19 in rising, through its engagement with the shoulders on the punch-bars, acts to pull down the rod 9, lowering the rear end of the lever 81 and raising its forward `end to elevate and actuate the transfer punchbar 15 and its punch 1 `independently of its motor. As the universal bar is actuated with each type signal, the transfer component will be added `to all type signals so long as therod 9 is coupled lwith the universal bar 19.
llhen the bar 9 is rocked or turned on its pivot 12 into `the `position indicated in broken or dotted lines in Fig. 1 and is thus uncoupled from the rod 16, thenthe trans- `fer punch 1 will respond `only to its motor and be uninfluenced by the bar 19 as above described, and will then only operate as a component of a space signal. j
As already stated, the transfer component punch 1 is coupled, with the units stop pertaining to the space signal to effect the recording of the units value of the space signal, but when the .transfer compo-nent of the space signal is *added to the type signal, the unit value to be 'recorded isno longer the constant valueo-f a space signal but the variable value of a type signal,and, therefore, the units measuring mechanism of the space signal must be rendered inoperative so that the units will be measured from the type signal, the unit stop for which is' coupled with the `dimensioning component or punch of the type signal.
The lever 20 connecting the punch bar 15 of the transfercomponent of the space signal punch 1 is coupled with the correspending unitestop-actuating bar 10, and for effecting the coupling and uncoupling .of this stop, in accordance with this invention` the bearing 18 in the punch bar 15 for the lever 20 may be opened and closed to form a `detachable coupling. This `bearing is formed in two parts which together embrace a rounded portion 21 on one end of the lever 20. The part 22 of the bearing is formed on or in one with the punch-bar, but the lower part 23 is formed of a piece mounted to slide between guides formed on the bar, and is arranged to pass through an opening in the punchbar. i
When the movable part23 of. the bearin is in its forward or closed position the lever 20 is moved by the punch-bar and the units value of a space signal is recorded.
lV hen, however, the transfer signal producing member is operated from the universal bar 19, the movable part 23 of the bearing is withdrawn to the position indicated in broken lines, Fig. 1, so that when the punch-bar is raised by the lever it rises without carrying with it the units stop operating lever 20 of the transfer component punch 1. j i j To facilitate the adjustment of the movjustinent simultaneously with the adjustnient of the punch-bar operating levers, there iscoupled to the sliding part 23 a lever` 24C which is pivoted to thelever 81 at I25 and is coupled at its upper end by a link 26 `to the bar 9. The coupling shown is in the A spring detent 27 is provided and is `adapted to engage with one or other of two notches 28,` 291, on the sliding part to hold it in either of its adjusted positions.

which are secured conveniently to the outside of the machine frame and pass through slots 32 inthe ba1.` `At its inner end the bar 30 has a downwardly extending slotted portion 33 which embraces a stud 361 on the up- "per end of therod, and the slot 3S is sufficiently deep to accommodate and retain the stud `in both of its positions of adjustment, and when the rod 9 is reciprocated by the bar `16. j A spring detent `39`is secured to the ma.- chine frame and arranged to engage one or other of two notches 11, 4:21, in. the bar to retain it against accidental movement when in eitherof its adjusted positions. In "the class of machineto which the present invention refers there is a justification indicator Scoperating with the linemeasuring mechanism from which the operator or compositor ascertains what keys it isnecessary` to operate to form in the recordstrip the justification signals for the line, and coacting with this indicator is a space counter 14kX which is operated witheach signal for a justification space. In the organized n1achine this space counter' is operated by a motor, the 4air or operative Huid for which is supplied from the motor of the transfer coinponentpunch of the space signal.
` When the mechanism is in operation for coupling the dimensioning signal producing members with the transfer punch, the latter operated independently of its motor, and, therefore, the motor for the space counter will not be energized; it is accordingly necessary that the space counter be operated rwith each type signal with which the transfer component punch is coupled as otherwise the fraction presented by the 'justification inf` dicator would be inaccurate.
i A convenient method of operating the space counter comprises a lever r3 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to the machine frame at 43a. Each time the rod is raised by the uni- 5 versal bar thelever will be actuated to lift vthe space counter one division.
In accordance with the present invention the zero stop device for the units rack is slidable as, for example, by securing the block 44a retaining the bars 44 and 45, by a pin and slot connection to the machine frame. As shown. the block 44a is provided with slots 44b through which bolts 44c extend into the frame. The adjustment of the block is accomplished by the usual adjusting screw 345% A gag block 50 having two acting faces 50El and 50b situated in different planes and joined by an inclined or cam portion is positioned between the block 44a and the screw 45a and is capable of being moved vertically to present one or the other of its active faces between the block 44a and the screw 45a. When the face 50b is presented to abut the rear end of block 44a, the latter is in proper 2'5 zero position for normal operation, towhich position it may be adjusted by operating the set screw 45a. When, however, the gag block is moved downwardly, the block 44a, carrying with it the bars 44 and 45 and the unit rack 11, is moved in a direction toward the unit stops 13, by contact of the block 44a with the inclined portion of the gag block. At the end of this downward motion. of the gag block the face 50n will bear against the y rear end of the block 44Il as shown in Fig. 3
and the Zero stop mechanism will have been moved toward the stops 13, this movement amounting to two units because the face 50EL is formedtwo units in advance of the face 50".
In this do-wn position of the gag block, therefore, the units rack is advanced two units with respect to its normal position and when on the'operation of a key, the units rack is raised into mesh with the teeth of the units wheel to determine the rotation of the units wheel in accordance with the stop of the series of unit rack stops 13 which has been raised, the recorded value of the signal as measured by` the advance of the line-measuring rack 14 will be two units less than normal.
- The gag block 50 is carried in guides 51 in the lmachine frame and is moved vertiv cally to shift the block into and out of operative position Iby the rod or link 52. As the block is moved down the inclined part thereof moves the slidable block 44a forward,
against the tension of the spring 53 one end of which is secured to the block 44L and the other end to the machine frame, until the face 508L bears against the rear face of the block 44a.
In order that the block 44a may be oper- .65 ated simultaneously with the coupling up or uncoupling of the transfer component with the type signal producing devices the rod 52 is connected to one arm of a bell crank lever 54 which is pivoted to the machine frame at 55 and has its other end con- 70 nected to the operating bar 30 of the transfer component coupling mechanism.
When the bar 30 is pulled toward the operator (Fig. 1) the -bell crank lever 54 is rocked to force the block 50 downwardly 75 to the position just mentioned; the same motion also couples up the transfer punch bar 15 and the justication space counter 14 c with the universal bar 19 and moves out of place the lower bearing member 23 for the 80 lever 20, whereby upon the depression of a character key, the normal character indicating punches are operated as well as the transfer indicating punch; the space counter is also operated; the transfer punch unit stop is not operated; and because the unit rack is displaced two units toward the unit rack stop 13 operatgd in accordance with the character key struck, the line measuring devices will record two units less than the normal value corresponding with said character key.

In a typographie composing machine provided with line measuring mechanism including a units rack, a series of signal producing devices including dimensioning signal producing members and a transfer signal producing member` a stop for the units rack normally connected with said transfer signal producing member. means for operatively coupling a dimensioning signal producing member with the transfer signal producing member and for simultaneously disconnecting the transfer signal producing` member from its units rack stop. and, in combination therewith, a slidably mounted zero abutment for the units rack and a device connected with said coupling means for advancing the position of said abutment simultaneously with the coupling of the dimensioning and transfer signal producing members.
