BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed October 16, 1916. Serial No. 125,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN B. ARM- STRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Construcition, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to connecting means between metallic sheets used in various types of construction, such as corn cribs, grain bins, etc.
The main object of my invention is one which provides a maximum rigidity in holding the entire structure in its assembled condition and one also wherein the joints between various sections are tight to prevent the admission of dust or moisture.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a corn crib constructed in accordance with my invention, and,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective showing the joining means between adjacent plate sections.
In these drawings, the grain bin is shown as being constructed of a plurality of plate sections 1, all suitably joined by means of the connecting structure shown in Fig. 2. In this figure, it will appear that each longitudinal edge of the sheets 1, is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending beads 2 slightly spaced from each other, as shown. These beads on adjacent edges are all constructed to nest with each other and are assembled in the overlapping relation indicated. The inside face of one of the sections is provided with an upstanding angle iron 3 and bolts 4 are then passed through the two adjacent sheets in the space between beads and also through one leg of the angle iron 3. This structure is then drawn tight, whereupon all lateral strain is placed upon the Specification of Letters Patent.

beads 2 and in this manner, shearing of the bolts or rivets 4, is prevented. The beads themselves produce a rigid structure, but when coupled with the angle iron, produce one whlch is practically indestructible. The beads 2 form an active stiffening means for the outslde of the bin, while the angle irons 3 form the active stifiening means for the inside of the bin.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a construction which afl'ords a maximum rigidity and one whereln all strain except that of holding the adjacent edges of two sheets together is entlrely removed from the bolts or rivets 4.
What I claim, is:
In a grain bin, a wall therefor including a plurality of relatively thin plain metallic sheets, a joint structure for uniting the meetlng edges of said sheets, comprisn a pair of spaced parallel corrugated bea s formed upon each of the adjoining edges of said sheets, intervening substantially fiat portlons of considerable width located between said beads, said adjoining edges being formed to overlap so that the beaded portions thereof will be arranged in nested relation, a stabilizing angular member having one of its legs disposed in parallel relation and physical contact with the intervening flat portions of said sheets to provide a base for the latter, and its other leg disposed at substantially right angles to the first mentioned leg to provide vertical stiffening means for said member, and a plurality of transversely disposed bolts rigidly connecting the oining edges of said sheets by passlng through registering openings formed in the intervening fiat. portions and through the base leg of said angular member.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN B. ARMSTRONG.
