Improvement in Machines for Bundiing Laths.
No. 130,687. Patented Aug. 20,1872.
WITNE$3E$ INVENTOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. ANDERSON, OF FLINTVILLE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BUNDLING LATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,687, dated August 20, 1572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN S. ANDERSON, of Flintville, in the county of Brown and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Machines for Bundling Laths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference bein g had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
My invention has relation to means for preparing laths for transportation and market; and consists in a novel apparatus for forming the same into bundles, as hereinafter specified and claimed.
AA of the drawing represent the bed-plates, and B B the cross-ties, forming a frame for my apparatus. Theletters 0 represent levers pivoted at or upon the bed-plates, in the manner shown. The levers are respectively construct ed with enlarged and concavedheads, as shown at c, which form circular jaws to receive and give shape to the bundles of laths. In the lower lips of twoof these adjoining heads I form a. slot, as shown at d, and in the remaining heads I affix bolts, which pass through the slots d, respectively, and, while uniting the heads together, play back and forth in said slots as the jaws are being closed or opened. I usually interpose a small washer between the heads of these clamping-arms, and upon said bolt, as shown at e. The letter E represents a crossbar or foot-board, upon which the operators weight is placed to force the jaws or clamps together in forming a bundle. When the bundle is completed the jaws are opened by raising the lifting-arm G' attached to the cross-bar E. The letters H represent cams pivoted to the heads of levers C, respectively, in the manner shown on the drawing. The office of these cams is to enable the operator to press down the top of the bundle into the jaws of the levers, and this may be accomplished by forcing their loose ends upward until they assume the position shown by the dotted lines on Fig. 2. It is apparent that in case the feet of the levers O are allowed play within a suitable box without pivoting to a frame, the same result would be accomplished; and hence I do not deem my invention confined to the pivoted levers only. It is also apparent that a very good result might be attained by securing one pair of the levers in a rigid position while permitting the other pair to have play either horizontally or vertically.
What I claim as new is- The combination of the levers (l, cams H, treadle E, and lifting-bar G, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified; I
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of twowitnesses.
JOHN S. ANDERSON.
