WILLIAM T. WILLIE, OF. INDEPENDENCE, TEXAS.
`IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,682, dated August 20, 187:2.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Rail-Fence, invented by IVIL- LIAM T. WILLIE, of Independence, in the county of Washington and State of Texas.
Figure l. is a side view of a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line ma, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fence, showing the inclined position of the posts with reference to the panels or rails.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is an improvement in the class of fences having triangular-shaped posts or couplings and it consists in arranging posts of a triangular form and a certain construction diagonally with the rails forming the body of each panel, so that long and short rails may be utilized, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A is the base-piece of the triangular post, and B B are the outer inclined braces, which cross each other near their upper ends and are securely nailed. C are the inner braces, which are arranged parallel with and at such a distance from the outer braces B as to allow space between them to receive the ends ot' the rails of the panels. The braces C are also nailed to each other at their point of crossing, and to the parts A B.
I intend to make this post ot' scantlings or strips which are worthless for most other constructive purposes.
It is economically important to the farmer that the rails composing the fence he removes, and for which he substitutes another, should be fully utilized on the spot. Hence I purpose setting the posts diagonally across the fence alternately, in opposite directions, which brings the lower or base portions of every successive pair of posts much nearer each other than they would otherwise he. This renders it practicable to utilize the short rails for the bottom and longer rails for the top portion ot' the panel, as shown.
The stakes or other short pieces will constitute part of the completed post or panel by being arranged between the rails, as clearly shown in'Fig. 2.
In the fence herein described, triangular posts, constructed of the braces 4B C, base piece A, and cross-pieces- D, arranged diagonally with the rails ofthe panels, and, alten nately, in opposite directions, as specified.
WILLIAM THOMAS WILLIE.
