sure upon all of said plungers orfor varying the degree of pressure exerted by any of said plungers with respect to the others in an desired ratio. r
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the following description.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a power press having the invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view thereof upon line 22 of Fig. 1 with parts of the press head broken away,
Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan view of the improved press head, and
Fig. 4 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of said press head.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates 'the vertically reciprocating ram of a power press 6 said ram being actuated from a main drive shaft 7 through cranks 8 and connecting link 9 in the usual and well known way.
While the press head constituting the subject matter of the present invention may be constructed in a number of ways, I hawe, in the particular embodiment of the invention herein shown, illustrated the same as being made of three parts, namely, blocks 10 and 11 and a plate 12. The block 11 is properly bored to form a plurality of cylinders 13 and is recessed to form a chamber 14 with which all of the cylinders communicate.
The plate 12 forms a cover for the chamber 14 and screws 15 draw the block 11 and plate 12 forcibly together. A copper packing wire 16 disposed in channels 17 and 18 of plate 12 and block 11 respectively form an airtight joint between these parts. within each of the cylinders 13 is a piston Disposed 19 provided with a leather packing ring- 20 that is held in place by a screw 21. These pistons are extended to form piston rods 22 adapted to engage guide collars 23 movable in chambers 24 formed in block 10. The
press head consisting of the blocks 10 and 11.
and plate 12 is connected to the ram 5 by bolts 25 which pass through the ram through plate 12'and have threaded engagement in block 11. Blocks 10 and 11 are connected by means of screws 26. A gage 27 is in communication with chamber 14 and provides means to enable the operatorto determine the degree of pressure existing in said cham-' her at any point in the operation of the press, and consequently to determine the degree of pressure being exerted upon the work, it being understood that this pressure is exerted through the pistons and piston rods upon press points or plungers 28 that depend from the collars 23.
It is apparent that if all of the pistons are of the same size the pressure will be automatically equalized upon all of the plungers or press points 28, while any described difference in pressure may be brought about by varying the sizes of the pistons with relation to each other.
It has been found in practice that the pressing of materials without this apparatus is more or less irregular, due to the differences in the heights of the bases 29. The present invention provides means for rendering this pressure uniform. It is contemplated that when the ram reaches its downward limit of movement the resistance of the material being pressed will be such as to elevate the press points 28 enough to slightly lift collars 23 so that the fluid pressure is doing the work. Guide pins 31 may be employed for maintaining registry of the parts and any suitable structure of base may be used. However, these latter are features common in power presses.
The present invention will be found highly useful in many relations and in many arts. The making of tablets, pellets, molded block articles of many kinds as well as the making of explosive charges requires the provision. of a press having a large number of press points or plungers and wherein it is desirable to have the pressure exerted by the several press points as nearly uniform as poscertain percentage of the articles being manufactured subjected to a greater degree of pressure than the others and, in F 1g. 3, I
have indicated some of the cylinders and pistons at l3 as being slightly larger'in diameter than the other, it being apparent that these will exert a, greater pressure upon their respective press points than the cylinders and pistons of smaller diameter.
l/Vhile the particular embodiment of the invention herein described and illustrated will efficiently serve the purposes set forth, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the ders and a chamber in the press head with which all of said cylinders communicate.
3. A structure as recited in claim 2' in combination with a pressure indicating element in communication with said chamber.
4;. A structure as recited in claim 2 in combination with means for limiting the upward movement of the plungers with respect to the press head.
5. A device of the character described comprising a block bored to form a plurality of cylinders and recessed to form a chamber in communication with all of said cylinders.
6. A structure as recited in claim 5 in combination with a. plate covering said chamber, a packing element disposed between the plate and the block and means for binding the plate and block together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
