MACHINE FOR TESTING MATERIALSI Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 18, 1911'. Serial m5. 615,221.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD SCHILLER, factory manager, of 150 Engerthstrasse, Vienna, XX/Q, in the Empire of Austria- Hungary, have invented an Improved Machine for Testing Materials; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The subject matter of my invention is an improved machine for testing materials of various kinds.
Testing machines comprising a cylinder and a ram are known, and also a testing machine for annular or tubular trial-pieces, or work-pieces, is already well known, in which the outer periphery of the ram and cylinder, or of a lining placed thereon, is adapted to the shape of the annular or tubular workpiece which is to be placed thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a press of the type last described of such shape and arrangement of its parts that not only annular or tubular work-pieces, but also rod shaped trial-pieces can be tested both as to tensile strength and also as to resistance to collapse or buckling resistance.
One illustrative embodiment of my in vention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sect-ion through the cylinder and ram.
Referring to the drawing, the press comprises the stationary cylinder a and the ram or plunger I), packed by means of' packing rings 6 the outer periphery of the cylinder and ram being so shaped that a circular face .9 is formed, over which the annular or tubular work-piece to be tested is placed either directly or with a lining between the same. The pressure medium is supplied to the cylinder through the pipe 9. The stationary part of the press, in the present case the cylinder a, is connected with a base 0. By means of this arrangement annular or tubular work pieces placed over the face 8 or a lining mounted thereon are tested by giving pressure. Now in order to be able to test with this machine also rod-shaped trialpieces or work-pieces both as to g tensile strength and as to reslstance to collapse or I buckling resistance, I provide abow-shaped or U-shaped frame A whose bottom part embraces the cylinder a and corresponds in shape to the semicircular outer face .9 of the cylinder, so that said frame is adapted to be placed upon the press, the ram 6 remaining freely movable. The frame A is provided with a projection A, which rests upon the part C of the base 0. The top part M'of the frame A carries the gripping-head K and is traversed by two pillars D D which are connected with the head-piece B Patented July 23,1912.
adapted to be placed upon the face 8 of the I plunger 6 and with the second head-piece or bridge E which carries at N the upper grip- Ping-headK A trial-piece or work-piece P to be subjected to tension can be clamped in the gripping-heads K K plunger or ram 6 moves in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 its motion is directly imparted by the parts B, D-, D E and K and the pressure in the cylinder acting on the ram or plunger is exercised as tension on the trial rod P. A trial-piece or work-piece T may be placed between the top face R of the head-piece B and the bottom face L of the fixed frame A and subjected to pressure.
What I claim as my invention and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a testing machine, the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder and a ram both together having a circular outer face for placing thereon annular or.
tubular work-pieces to be tested, of a frame adapted to be placed upon the stationary part of the press, said frame carrying a gripping head mounted rigidly thereon, and another gripping-head and a head-piece movable and connected with the movable part of the press, substantially as described.
2. In a testing machine, the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder When the and a ram both together having a circular outer face for placing thereon annular or tubular work-pieces to be tested, of a frame adapted to be placed upon the stationary part of the press and a projection of the base, said frame carrying a gripping-head mounted rigidly thereon, and another gripping-head and a head-piece movable and connected with the movable part of the press, substantially as described.
3. In a testing machine the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder and a ram both together having a circular outer face for "placing thereon annular or tubular Work-pieces to be tested, of a frame adapted to be placed upon the semicircular face of the stationary part of the press, said frame carrying a gripping-head mounted rigidly thereon, and another gripping-head and a head-piece movable and connected With the movable part of the press, substantially as described.
4:. In a testing machine the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder and a ram both together having a circular outer face for placing thereon annular or tubular work-pieces to be tested, of a frame adapted to be placed upon the semicircular face of the stationary part of the press, said frame carrying a gripping-head mounted rigidly thereon, a movable head piece adapted to be placed upon the semicircular face of the movable part of the press and a sec ond gripping-head movable with said headpiece, substantially as described.
5. In a testing machine, the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder and a ram, both together having a cir cular outer face for placing thereon annular or tubular work-pieces to be tested, of a frame having in its lower part a semicircular face corresponding to the semi-circular face of the stationary part of the press and adapted to be placed thereon, said frame carrying a gripping-head mounted rigidly thereon, a movable head-piece having a bowshaped face corresponding to the semicircular face of the movable part of the press and adapted to be placed thereon, and a gripping head movable with the head-piece, substantially as described.
6. In a testing machine, the combination with a press comprising a hydraulic cylinder having a semicircular outer face and a 0 ram movable in said cylinder and having a semicircular outer face forming with said face of the cylinder an outer circular face for placing thereon annular or tubular work pieces to be tested, of a frame having in its lower part a semicircular face corresponding to and adapted to be placed upon the semicircular face of the cylinder, said frame having a projection which rests upon the base of the cylinder, and carrying in its upper part a gripping-head mounted rigidly thereon, a movable head piece adapted to be placed upon the ram and another gripping head located opposite the gripping-head of the frame and connected with the movable head-piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNHARD SCHILLER.
