This invention relates to transom opera' tors, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a very simple, eiiicient transom operator ofthe concealed type, which can be very cheaply produced.
y Another object of the invention is to provide a transom operator in which the operating means may be very readilyv manipulated, said ope'rating means including, nevertheless, certain instrumentalities for locking the transom firmly in the fully opened position, as well asin the closed position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a transom operator in which the transom 'when released from the open vposition in which it is locked is returned automatically tothe closed position by a spring, and in which the effect of this spring To these and other ends, the invention rconsists in the novel features andcombinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In 'theform shown, the transom 10 of usual construction is located in the upper partof la door frame in the customary manner, and the transom operating means is part in the'door casing 11. This operating means includes a flat baseplate 12, which may be conveniently by screws 17. y It the construction attached to the inside of the door casing by screws 13. This plate is relatively short, extending from a point slightly above the lower edge of thetransom to a point not very far below the lower edge of the transom. Near its upper end, the plate carries a .journal block V14, which serves as a bearing for a rock shaft 15, by means of which the transom is manipulated. This rock shaft extends throughv an opening in the casing, and carries at its inner end a crank orarm 16, secured to the edge of the tra-nsom. Preferably, the arm 16 is mortised in the edge of the transom and secured in place will belunderstood that by described, the shaft l5 forms in effect ar swinging trunnion fixed `to the transom, and` operating in an openmg in4 the door frame at one side of the transom. At the opposite side, the transom `is swingingly supported in the door frame by a plaintrunnion and socket, which I have not considered it necessary to illustrate. The shaft 15 andthe transom carried thereby `are operated by means of a depending swinging arm 18. In the particular embodiment shown, the outer end of the shaft is of square cross section, and the upper end of the arm 18 has a square opening 'conforming to the square portion of the shaft beneath a cotterpin 19, so that the shaft and arm are effectively interlocked. The mechanismf for operating the arm 18 includes a sliding bar 20, adapted to move in a substantially vertical direction when actuated by a crank 21 or the like, accessible at the outside of the door casing. The upper end of the slide 20 is pivoted at 22 to a bell crank or elbow lever 23, pivotally mounted at the bend of its elbow on the base plate by means of a pivot member 24. At its otherend,`the lever 23 is pivoted at 25 to a short link 26 `at one end ofV said link, the opposite end of said link being pivoted at 27 to thelower end of 'the operating Varm k18.
At the lower end of the slide 20, the same is operatively connected with the crank 21.
`This crank, which has a suitable knob by by screws 30 at a point immediately behind the inner casing member of the door frame. At its inner4 end, this rock shaft .is provided with a crank p r lon 31,110 which is pivoted at a curved'r link 33. In order to provide convenient means 'for limitingthe outward movement ofthe transom, I'provide a :pin 18a projecting fro'ni the base plate 12 WithwhiCh the' lever 18 contacts, asshown' in Fig. 4. l
A' spring' 37 normally holds the transom in theA vclosed position. Whatlclaimis; f 1. In a transom operator, the combination of a transom, a swinging operating member rigidly secured to the transom, a slide movable up and down, means for operating said slide, a toggle connection between said slide and said swinging member, and a toggle connection between said slide and said operating means, said first toggle connection adapted to look the transom in the closed position and said second toggle connection adapted to lock the transom in the open position.
2. In a transom operator, the combination of a base plate, a swinging operating arm having a swivel mounting therein, a slide mounted on the face of said base plate to move in a substantially vertical direction, a toggle connection between said slide and said operating arm whereby said transom is locked inthe closed position, an operating Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the member for said slide, and a toggle connection between said slide and said last named member which raises the slide to open the transom and holds the transom inthe open position.
3. In a transom operator, the combination of a transom, an operating slide therefor, a toggle operatively connecting said slide and transom, a second toggle for operating said slide, a casing inclosing the slide and toggles, and means extending through said casing for operating said second toggle comprising a manually operable rocking shaft directly connected to one arm of said last mentioned toggle, the other arm of the toggle connected to said slide.
