WILLIAM HOWARD LIVEN S, OF HAMIISTEAD, LONDON, ENGLAND.
rnoJEcTrLE.
` To all whom it may concern:
` Be-it known that I, WILLIAM HOWARD LIVENS, a subject of the King of Great Y -Britain, residing atv Hampstead, London,
England, have invented a new andu'useful Improvement `in Projectiles, of which the following is a specication.' This invention relates to projectlles, par- Y ticularly to those containing liquefied gas,
v and has for its object to allow the projectile to contain a large quantity of liquefied gas with respect to the quantity of materlal em- A' v ployed inthe manufacture of the projectile.
c According to this invention a projectile consists ofv a tube having contracted ends I 7 which are welded'or otherwise suitably conf nected to a central tube.
In the accompanying drawings l Figure 1V is a sectional view of a projectile made in accordance wlth my invention, adapted to contain lethal liquefied gas. v Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale and-v in section, showing more in detail the preferred construction.
:if is a projectile or bomb formed of a tube i having contracted ends welded to a central tube which forms a stay, n is a diaphragm l l fdividing the tubeinto two chambers. n Y Y The short chamberat the base end is fitted with a screw plug s and has cross holes m,
i j byowhich the liquid gas is introduced into the bomb; the longer end is packed with the bursting charge and takes the gaine o and the fuse p. The central tube welded at both ends intothe light body so strengthens it Vthat la large content is obtained for a given Arrvksize of projectile, and the weight of the Y j lethaly substance is proportionately increased Y, `v`so thatl it mayeven equal that of the empty bomb. In this manner for a given number of tons of gas projected, there is a very great saving in the quantity of material required over older devices.
In Fig. 2 parts similar to those shown in Fig. l are similarly lettered, but this figure Vof the drawings showsv more in detail the bursting charge, etc. In the construction shown, the pellet 1 carries the striking pin and is slidable in the bored body 2, being normally held at safety by a shear wire 3; 4 is a 0.410 revolver cartridge carrying Bickford time fuse 5. The lower portion of the fuse comprises an elongated tube 6 carrying the detonator 7 containing the fulminate, the whole being carried in a sheath 8.
j The operation of the fuse is as follows the Upon discharge of the projectile from the gun the pellet l sets back first shearing the of the cartridge 4to light the fuse 5 which res the detonator 7 after the bomb has landed.
What I claim is In a projectile, the combination with a tube having contracted ends, of a central tube to which the said contracted.` ends are connected, a diaphragm dividing the Vtube into a rear chamber and a forward chamber, a hole in the tube connecting the rear chamber to the projectile, a plug for closing the rear chamber, an explosive charge in the forward chamber, and afuse closing theforward chamber.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 31st day of July, 1918.
WILLIAM HOWARD LIVENS.
