Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM U. GRIF- FITHS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,

My invention comprehends the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described in the specification and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention but it is to be understood that changes in the details ,of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing therefrom.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the conduit for supplying the water for flushing a water closet bowl, showing the parts embodying my invention partly in side elevation and partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, a portion of pipe shown at the top of said Fig. 1 being omitted; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 designates a portion of a supply conduit for supplying water from the street main for flushing a water closet apparatus. In the construction as illusstrated the portion 1 of the conduit is in alinement with an extension pipe 2 which extends to a flush tank (not shown). When the valve mechanism, indicated as a whole at 3 in Fig. 1, is opened to permit the water to flow into and through the portion 1 of the conduit it flows forwardly through the pipe 2 into a flush tank (not shown). Intermediate the pipe 1 and the extension pipe 2 a fitting 10 is provided the main channel 11 of which is in alinement with the pipes 1 and 2. The said fitting is provided with a hollow lateral projecting portion 12 in the chamber of which a lever 13 is pivoted. The said lever is supported upon the side walls of the said projecting portion 12 by means of trunnions 14 and .15 which project from' an intermediate part of the lever into holes formed in the bosses 16 and 17 upon the opposite sides of the said hollow projecting portion. These bosses project inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The side wall upon which the boss 17 is formed and from which it projects is removable as is apparent from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings in order to permit the placing of the lever 13 in the chamber of said projection.
One end of the lever 13 is provided with an open slot 18 whereby said end is bifurcated to permit it to straddle the rod 20 immediately underneath the head 19 which is secured to the upper end of the said rod.
The valve mechanism for controlling the How of water from the street main into the portion 1 of the pipe is secured to the lower end of the rod 20. 21 designates a rod of relatively small diameter which is secured to the said head 19 and is extended in alinement with the rod 20 and'projects through a central opening formed in a plate22 supported upon a shoulder 23 at the upper end of the channel 11 of the fitting 10. The plate 22 is provided with openings 24 for the passage of water'and said plate is held in position by the lower end of the pipe 2. Interposed between said plate and the head 19 is a coiled spring 25 which holds the rod 20 normally in its lowermost position with the valve mechanism at 3 closed. The other or opposite end of the lever 13 is provided with an opening 26 through which the lower end of a valve rod 27 projects. Adjacent to its lower end the said valve rod is provided with a laterally extending flange 27* which rests upon the upper side of the lever 13 adjacent to the opening 26 therethrough. The rod 27 extends upwardly from the chamber within the hollow projection 12 through an opening 28 in the inside portion of which is cut away to form a shoulder as indicated at 34. The inside portion of said flange belowthe shoulder is screw-threaded and is adapted to engage screw-threads upon a flange 36 which e'x-' tends above and surrounds the open upper endof the chamber 29. The outer edges of 'the diaphragm 32 rest upon the top of edge of the flange 36 and are clamped in such position by means of the shoulder 34 when the cover 31 is screwed down upon the flange 36 a's is indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The diaphragm 32 forms a seal for the open end of the chamber 29 and prevents the leakage of water therefrom. The center of the diaphragm 32 is provided with an opening and the portion of the said diaphragm immediately surrounding the said opening rests against the flange 30 upon the valve rod 27 and is clamped and held against said flange by means of a flange 37 upon a member 38 which is adapted to be connected to the upper end of the rod 27 in known manner. The part 38 constitutes in effect an extension or continuation of the rod 27 and it extends through a central opening 39 in the cover or closure 31.
The rod 27 is provided intermediate its ends with a valve 40 which is adapted to close the'opening 28 through which the rod I 27 extends into the chamber of the lateral V proj eotion 12.
j 42 designates a lever. connected intermediate itsends at 43 to theupper end of the extension-part 38. The inner end of said lever 42 is provided with a yoke 44 the opposite sides of which are positioned-upon the oppo- .sitesides of the upper end of the part 10 of the fitting and are pivotally secured thereto by means of projecting bolts 45, The opposite end of'the said lever extends forwardly 1 beyond its point of connection to the part 38 "and is adapted to be operated by means of the pivotal movements of the water closet seat as it is moved toward and from the water cl'oset bowl. The end 46 of the said lever is so positioned with respect to the water closet seat that when the latter is depressed the end 46 of said lever is also de pressed causing movement of said lever about its pivots 45 to depress the rod27, carrying the valve 40 into engagement with the upper side of the top wall of the hollow lateral projection 12 so as to close the open ing 28 therein. Such movement occasions downward movement of the end of the lever 13 with which the flange 27 on the lower end of the rod'27 contacts. Downward movement of said end causes an upwardmovement of the other or opposite end of the said lever which is in engagement with the rod 20 underneath the head 19 to raise the said rod and thereby move the valve at 3 into flush tank. Upon release of pressure from the seat the action of the spring 25 causes movement of the parts 20, 13, 27, 27 38, 40 and 42 in the opposite direction from that just described. As a result the valve at 3 is moved into closed position while the valve 40 is opened to permit water to flow in reverse direction through the pipe 2, through the hollow projection 12, and thence through the opening into the chamber 29 and thence through the pipe 50 and extensions of the same into the water closet bowl (not shown) to flush the same.
It will be understood that when the water is flowing from the flush tank through the chamber 29 it exerts considerable pressure in the latter with the result that there is a tendency to leakage. Leakage, however, is prevented if a diaphragnisuch as 32 is employed having its edges clamped between the shoulder 34 and the top of th flange 36 and its central portion clamped by the clamping flanges 30 and 37 as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings;
By reason of the construction as described in which thelever 13 is provided with a bifurcated end which straddles the rod 20, the latter together with the valve secured to the lower end thereof may be removed from the pipe 1 by removing the plate 22 and thereafter drawing said rod and valve upwardly through said pipe and through the bifurcated end .of said lever. Also the rod 27 the part 38 and the valve 40 may be re moved merely by disconnecting the part 38 from the lever 42 and removing the'capor cover 31. One advantage of the construction as described is that it allows the removal of these parts as described without removing the lever 13.
Claims:
1. In mechanism for water closet apparatus, the combination of a water supply conduit. a rod in said conduit having a valve secured thereto for closing said conduit and having means at its upper end forming a shoulder, a hollow projection extending laterally from said conduit, a lever situated in said projection and pivoted intermediate its ends one of its ends having an opening therethrough through which the said rod extends said end being situated immediately underneath said shoulder, and the opposite end of said lever being provided with an opening, a valve rod 'extei'rding into said hollow proj ection and having its lower endp-rojecting through said opening and also having means thereon for engaging said lever to depress the same and an operating lever outside of said chamber pivotally supported at one end and having engagement intermediate its ends with the said valve rod for operating the same.
. 2. In mechanism for water closet apfpaconduit, a rod in said conduit having a valve secured thereto for closing said conduit and having means at its upper end for forming a shoulder, a hollow projection extending laterally from said conduit, a lever situated in said projection and pivoted intermediate its ends one of its ends being bifurcated, said bifurcated end straddling said rod immediately underneath said shoulder and the opposite end of said lever being provided with an opening, an open-ended chamber secured to said projection said chamber communicating with the interior of the said hollow projection by means of an opening through the wall of the latter, removable means for closing said chamber, a valve rod extending through said chamber and through the opening between the said chamber and the said Copies of this patent may be obtained for hollow projection into the latter said valve rod extending into the opening in the said lever and having means in contact with the said lever whereby when the said valve rod is operated the said lever is also operated, and an operating lever outside of said chamber pivotally supported at one end and having engagement intermediate its ends with said valve rod for operating the same and thereby operating the lever in the hollow of said projection, substantially as described.
