CHAUNCEY O. FORTNEY, OF BOWLING GREEN, vOHIO.
VALVE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1919.
Application filed September 26, 1918. Serial No. 255,810.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY O. FORT- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to multiport back pressure valves, one of its objects being to provide means whereby any one of the valves that may hang and remain unseated, can be forced to its seat without the necessity of removing the cover plate of the valve casing.
A further object is tol provide means for automatically returning the supplemental valve seating means to set position should the operator fail to restore it to such position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully -described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of the valve.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the casing of a multiport back pressure valve, there being a partition 2 in the casing in which are arranged ports 3 each of which is provided with a valve 4. The stems 5 of the valves extend loosely through a disk 6 and are adapted to be held properly spaced thereby. A head is provided on the free end of each stem, as shown at 7 and springs 8 are mounted on the stems and bear at their ends against the valves 4 and the disk 6 respectively, thereby serving normally to hold the valves closed. An actuating stem 9 is swiveled in the partition 2 and is screw threaded,
thus to engage the disk 6 and shift it when the stem is rotated. A hand wheel 10 or the like is provided for rotating the stem 9.
The casing 1 is closed by a cover plate 11 in which the stem 9 is mounted for rotation, and movably mounted in the cover plate and in alinement with the respective stems 5 are setting pins 12 provided at their upper ends with heads 13 which rest on springs 14. These pins have long pitched threads thereon so that when the pins are rotated they will move downwardly quickly against the heads 7 and force the valves 4 to their seats should they be hung and fail to close. The springs 14 will return the pins 12 to their normal or set positions should the operator fail to unscrew them away from the heads 7. By turning the stem 9 the disk 6 will be raised or lowered to unseat or seat the valves simultaneously.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a casing having a plurality of ports and a cover plate, of a member movable toward or from the ports, valves slidably connected to said member and liftab-le thereby from their seats, setting pins in the cover plate and having spiral threads, said pins being revoluble to feed longitudinally against the respective valves7 and yielding means for returning the pins to their initial positions.
2. The combination with a casing having a plurality of ports and a cover plate, of a member movable toward and from the ports, valves for closing the ports, stems upon the valves and slidable in said member, means on the stems for holding the valves normally upon their seats, means on the stems for lifting the valves from their seats when the member is moved in one direction, setting pins alining with the stems and having long pitched threads engaging the cover plate, said pins being revoluble to screw against the stems of the valves and seat the valves, and means for automatically resetting the pins.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAUNCEY O. FORTNEY.
Witnesses E. BEvERsTooK, THOMAS M. LEA.
