INSTRUMENT Fon HANDLING JEWELS.
Sipecication of Letters Patent.
' Patented June 3, 1919.
Application filed October 8, 1918. Serial No. 257,346.
Bluff, in the county of Prairie and State of Arkansas, have inventedy new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Handling Jewels, of which the following iS a specification. i
My present invention pertains toinstruments for the use of jewelers; and it contemplates ,the provision of a peculiar and advantageous .jewel container and setter, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof: D
Figure l is a Side elevation of my novel instrument.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal Section of the same.
Figs. 3 and l are sections, taken in the planes indicated by the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the retainer of the instrument.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel device comprises a cylindrical member 1, and a longitudinal central screw 2 bearing in the outer end of the cylinder l and having a head or Enger piece 3. The screw 2 has for its function to move a follower-rod 4 that it carries forwardly as desired by the user. The inner end of the cylinder l is open and is provided at diametrioally opposite points with slots 5 for use in the connection of the container 6 to the tool formed .by the cylinder 1 and screw 2. The cylinder 1 may be made of any material compatible with its purpose, and the container 6 is preferably made of glass, though it may be of any other material without involving departure from certain of my claims. The container is provided at '7 with opposite lugs for coperation with the slots 5 in the cylinder 1 in the connection of the container to the said cylinder. Manifestly the said connection may be readily elfected, and while there is no liability of casual disconnection yet when desired the container may be expeditiously and easily detached from the cylinder. In the container @is a longitudinal central here 9, and
lembraces the container.
the follower-rodv lextends into said bore to.
enable the device to properly handle superimposed jewels in the bore.
The jewels are held in place inthe container 6 through' the medium of a resilient retainer 10. vThe forward end of the container 6 is closed by the retainer stop 11,
is split as shown and elastically clasps or The retainer 10 is preferably slotted at 13 to enable the operator tosee the jewels in the container 6.
My invention contemplates the provision of a number of containers, and each of these will be provided with a label calculated to apprise a jeweler of the size and make and class of movementl of the jewels contained in the container. The invention also contemplates arranging the several containers in a cabinet, and the tool in a central compartment of the cabinet.
When the screw 2 is turned to force the jewels downwardly in the container 6, the lowermost jewel will be about three-fourths exposed, see Fig. 5, and will be held firmly in place by the resilient retainer stop.
'In practice my novel containers may obviously be manufactured so cheaply that it is feasible to use them for the storage and shipment of jewels, and when this scheme is adopted my improvement will obviously enable a jeweler not only to expeditiously and easily select the particular jewel that he desires to place, but will also enable the jeweler to manipulate and position the jewel without any liability whatever -of the jewel being chipped, scratched o-r otherwise marred.
It will also be appreciated that in the practice of my invention all of the jewels are safely preserved in a compact manner and so there is no liabilityof dust or other deleterious substance being deposited upon the jewels.
In using my instrument the lowermost jewel therein is supplied with a drop of cement and is inserted in the hole in a roller table, and is pressed downwardly far enough to enable the end portion 11 of the retainer l0 to touch the roller table. The jewel is then displaced from the container 6 by a slight movement of the screw 2, and when necessary the jewel is straightened in the hole. Manifestly in this way the end. desired in the container by'theiendlf-poritiene11am?v the container 6. l
Having described myi'invention; v'vhastl I claim and desire tosecure by Lettersnlat-v 1.
