Be it knownthat I, SAMUEL H. DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ennis, in the county of Ellis; and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gin-Compresses, of which the following is a specification.

Describing the construction in detail, I
have shown a bed plate 10supported upon iron girders or I-beams 12 with heavy vertical columns 14 carrying an upper cross head 15, the latter bemg'retained in position b means of set collars 16 andnuts 18 carrie on the upper ends of the columns:
The bed plate 10 is recessed to form a chamber for receiving certain of the operative devices, and a cap plate 20 is secured to the outer portions of the bed plate by means of bolts 21. Set collars 22 are secured to plate 20. Heavy screws 24 are provided for .operating the follower block 25, and this block as well as cross head 15 is slotted in the manner shown for the'purpose of receivin the bale ties.
Eac screw 24 engages an internally threaded worm wheel 26 located between the bed plate 10 and the cap plate mentioned, and the worm wheels are provided with 0ppositely extending collar portions 28 and 29 which are received by recesses within the cap plate and bed plate. Thrust bearings are shown at 30.

A portion of the framework of the machine adjacent to the structure above described and supporting the latter is designated 45. l speed of .three hundred revolutions per minute is more than suflicient to compress cotton to the required density, the gearing and operative parts being proportioned to accomplish that result at less than the speed named.
The threaded screws 24 operate within a casing 50 and this casing and the chamber between the bed plate 10 and cap plate are filledwith oil for the purpose of providing easy running and for dust-proof construction.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the casing 60 extends upwardly to the bed plate 10, forming a protecting element for eachtof the screws similar to that formed by casing above described. The chamber formed within the bed plate for lubricating material is therefore in continuous communication with the chambers within casings so that the operative mechanism will be inclosed in an Oil bath.

this form further appears in Fig. 7. The
driving belt 62 transmits motion to pulley 63 provided with internally toothed portion 6&7
adapted to mesh with a pinion 65 carried on main shaft 32. The position of pulley 63 f at is controlled by means 'ofan operating lever 66 pivoted at 67 on'frame 68 and provided with acurved slot 69 Pulley 63 is rigid with a short shaft 67 having a collar 68 thereon passing through said slot 69. The
operation of lever 66 will therefore control the position of pulley 63 by im arting shifting. movement to the short sha on which it is mounted, and the operating lever is further controlled automatically by rod 47 extending toa point which Wlll permit of its control by the plunger.
In the form shown in Fig. 8 the osition "of pulley 63 (provided with the internal toothed flange member 64) is controlled by means of a rack bar 70 having connection with the-end of short shaft 67. The pinion 65 carried by this shaft may therefore be brought into proper relation with pinion 65' for roducing the reversing operation, or for shi to neutral position, thewreciprocation 0 rack bar 70 beingaccomplished by a means of lever 72 having a. segmental rack portion 73, said lever being pivoted at 7 4 and ental portion having connected.

In Fi 6 I have illustrated-modified forms of the ollower block and head block, these members being designated'75 and 76 and each bein provided with a concave portion 78 or 79, etween which the cotton is compressed. When compressing a square or rectan' lar bale, and securing a given degree of ensity, the surfaces of the bale will exeffecting a pand aft'erthe latter has been withdrawn' from the press, and after the ties have been applied thereto, the bale then having convex surfaces and the density being materially reduced in given portions thereof. This objectionable feature is avoided by employing the construction specified whereby a bale of a given density throughout may be produced, and one which will retain its uniform density and its original form after the ties have been applied and a bale removed from the press.
By this means a round or partially round bale is produced.- I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a framework, a follower operating therein, a screw for operating the -follower,,a shaft, and means carried thereby for operating the screw, and a speed changing and reversing device for controlling the shaft, said device last-named including a plurality of pinions adapted to mesh with each other at times, a toothed member adapted to mesh with one of the position of one of the pinions with reference to the other, said means last named includin a lever pivotally mounted at one end thereo a laterally extending device carried the pinions at times, and means for changing by the lever and including a cam slot positionedbetween the fulcrum of the lever and the handle thereof, slot controlling the position of one of the pinions, and adpistable means operated from the follower, and having connection with said lever near the fulcrum thereof.
