' Be it known that L'crmnnss KEMP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks,
'of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to the type of lock designated in my concurrent applicaand Serial No. 265,857, filed Dec. 9,1918,
in which arotatable hasp cylinder is adapted for engagement with a'jamb staple or equivalent stationary securing partfthe -object of the present invention being'the productionof'a lock of this character of simplified structure and few parts, but of maximum strength, and security. Hence, the lnvention consists ll lthe specific construction, combination and arrangement of a parts described and claimed, distinctive features being the provision of a'duplex' hasp cylinder for engagement'with two separate j amb staples; the peculiar formation of the rack bolt, its spring pawl, etc., and other details hereinafter set forth.

and 8,'the lock, as before intimated, being secured by the base plate B, to the door or other closure D, and it is secured thereto in such manner that the end of thecasing in which the hasp cylinder is mounted will overlap the staplesv S, S, and their base "plate S, when the door or other closure is "turned to closedposition. so as to leave an opening in the lock casing through which'the staples S, S, may project when the hasp cylinder-lids in proper position to receive said staples.
It 1s to be noted in this connection that my present form of: hasp cylinder H, is
practically a duplication of that shown in my hereinbefore mentioned concurrent applications, the essential difference resting in the fact that it is duplex in function, in
that it is made to accommodate and engage,

r which rest against the inner side walls of the cover C, as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3. These four slidable bearings r r r r effectually centralize and support the rack bolt R, in any and all positions, so that I am enabled to dispense with the casing guide posts, supports etc., used for the purpose in my aforesaid concurrent applications, thereby simplifying and lightening thestructure considered as a whole.
Said rear portion of the rack bolt R, is also slotted to straddle the inner end of the latch spindle L, as shown in Fig. 1. The key arbor K, and the latch spindle L, are positioned in axial alinement, but are not connected with each other in any manner, the latch spindle L, being journaled on the body plate of the cover C, while the key arbor K, is journaled on the base plate B,
as shown more particularly in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
Pivotally supported on a trunnion W, on the face of the rack bolt R, next the base plate B, is a spring pawl P, formed with a lateral bearing extension or tongue 2?, shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 7, which protrudes into and. through a recess, r formed for it in the rack bolt R, and into the path of action of the bolt actuating cam arms 70, Z, of the key. arbor K, and of the latch spindle L. In the said recess r is positioned a coiled spring r interposed between the bottom of the recess 1*, and the under side of the tongue 27, of the pawl P, and tending constantly to thrust said tongue 79, into the path of the actuating cam arms 75, and Z, of the key arbor K, and of the latch spindle L. A stud r", on the bottom of the recess 7**, and a corresponding stud p, on the under side of the pawl tongue 79, ma be provided for thepurpose of retaining the spring T in position. The long arm of the pawl lever P, is formed with a shoulder mg for engagement with a stationary part or stop 8, on the cover C, when the rack bolt R, is advanced, as in Fig. 2, there by preventing the retractile movement of said rack bolt B, until said pawl shoulder 32 is released from the stop s this release being effected by the depression of the pawl tongue 79, into the recess 1*, by either of the actuating cam arms k, or Z. The stop ,8, also, in conjunction with the pawl shoulder 79 prevents the forward travel of the rack bolt B, when the latter is in retracted position, as in Fig, 3, until cleared by the rocking of the pawl P, by means of one of the actuating cam arms 70, and Z. Adjacent to the mouth of the recess 0",
the rack bolt is formed on each side with lateral eXten'sions 1*, 7' to afford ample contactual surfaces for engagement with the actuating cam arms 70, Z. This construction will be understood by reference particularly to Fig. 16, when considered with Figs. 1, 2, 3'and 8.
When either of the bolt-actuating cam arms 76, or Z, are turned in the right direction out of normal position, they not only rock the-pawl P, by depressing its tongue 7), against the resistance of the spring r thereby releasing the shoulder 39 from the stop .5, but they also enter the mouth of said recess 1*, so that continued movement of the arm (is or Z) by reason of the engagement of its free end with the side walls of the recess r throws the rack bolt R, backward or for- 7 ward causing it to rotate the hasp cylinder H, to release or secure the staples S, S, as the case may be.
T, represents a key escutcheon and tumbler case ofv the well known cylinder or pin type, the tongue of which engages with the slot is, in the key arbor K, to actuate the latter in a manner well known in the art. Z is a spring bearing upon the eccentric portion Z of the latch spindle and tending to hold the spindle as set by means of the latch handle Z also in a manner well known in the art. I V
As before intimated, although the latch spindle and the key arbor are in axial alinement they are independently rotatable upon their axes. Ilence either may be used to reciprocate the rack bolt B, to make or break connection between the hasp cylinder H, and bolt B, and the staple S. 7
By placing the spring 17 within the recess rf, in the rack bolt R, I isolate and protect it and attain more direct action against the bearing tongue p, of the pawl P. Furthermore "by this self-contained structure and housing of the spring I obviate all danger of its displacement within the lock; and by placing the fulcrum r adjacent to the bearing tongue .27, a slight depression of the latter is suflicient to release the shoulder 39 on the long arm of the pawl P, from the stop 8", so that quick release of the bolt R, is assured in either direction.
By the use of twin staples S, S, in conjunction with my duplex hasp cylinder H, I attain great strength and security with simplicityof parts andv structure; and all the operative part-s of my locking mechanism are inclosed and rendered inaccessible when connection is made with the twin staples, so that I attain a lock that it is difficult if not impfissible to jimmy or otherwise tamper wit i What I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:

lock comprising a rotatable hasp cylinder adapted to engage with both of said staples and formed with peripheral teeth, a rack bolt formed with teeth engaging said hasp cylinder teeth, a spring pawl pivotally mounted on said rack bolt and formed with a shoulder for engagement with a stationary part and adapted for engagement with actuating cam arms on the key arbor and on the latch spindle, together with said cam-armed key arbor and said cam-armed latch spindle, for the purpose described. 7

In closure means of the character designated, in combination with a jainb staple, a lock comprising a rotatable hasp cylinder adapted to engage said staple and formed with peripheral teeth, a rack bolt formed with teeth engaging said hasp cylinder teeth and with a recess the side walls of which are adapted to receive and engage with the free ends of actuating cam arms on the key arbor and on the latch spindle, said cam-armed key arbor and latch spindle, a pawl pivotally mounted on said rack bolt and formed with a shoulder for engagement with a stationary part and also formed with a laterally ex- CHARLES KEMP.
