Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
c Application filed May 2, 1918. Serial No. 231,987.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York andl State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Pumps, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to a single action foot pump for compressing air, and to a pump of this character which shall be particularly suitable for the inflation of automobile tires and the like, being readily carried with the car and forming a fixture thereof, if desired.
It has for its object to provide a pump for use where power devices are not available and which will be convenient in operation and simple and effective in its action, eliminating the tiresome hand pumping; also, to afford a light, compact and satisfactory device which may be operated, by foot. The invention has for its object, furthermore, to so arrange the various parts of the apparatus that a comparatively long stroke is obtained with a minimum of movement and a minimum of eEort on the part of the operator.
The nature of the invention will be best understood' when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the improved pump with a portion of the pedal cut away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with a portion of the pedal and the cylinder wall broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a suitable frame providing a base for the apparatus, and consisting of opposite side pieces suitably united. At one end of the frame is pivotally secured, in well-known manner, one end of an oscillating cylinder 11 which is, furthermore, provided with a suitable valved outlet 12 for outside connection. From the free end of the cylind'er projects a piston rod 18 adapted to be reciprocated, in manner hereinafter set forth, to actuate its piston 1-1 to compress the air within the cylinder To effect this reciprocation of the piston in an eflicient and simple manner, the free end of rod 13 is connected to one end of a lever 15 which may be bifurcated at this end, as indicated. The other end of the lever 15 is also bifurcated and is pivotally attached to the sides of frame 10 to provide a fulcrum for said lever. Between the ends of the lever 15, there may be attached one end of a retractile spring 16 whose other end is anchored to the frame 10, said spring serving to withdraw the piston rod from cylinder 11 after the air has been compressed. i
This latter operation is e'ected through the medium of a pedal member or foot piece 17 in the nature of a bell crank pivotally secured to the sides of frame 10 beyond the end of said cylinder 11. The inner arm 18 of the bell crank is preferably oifurcated to permit of the passing therethrough of the piston rod 13, and is secured through suitable links 19 to the lever 15 between its fulcrum and' the point of attachment of the piston rod 13 thereto. In this manner, a compound lever is formed, which will provide a long stroke for the piston 14C upon depression of pedal or foot piece 17 and, when pressure on the latter is released, the piston and rod will be withdrawn under the action of retract-ile spring 16. The leverage mechanism, moreover, is particularly compact, and the whole apparatus will occupy but little space when not in use; and, in this connection, securing means such as a bail 20 is provided on the frame to swing over and hold down the free end of the foot piece 17.
I claim:
1. A foot pump, comprising a frame, an oscillating cylinder having its one end pivotally secured to one end of said frame, and a piston rod projecting from the opposite end of said cylinder, a lever fulcrumed to said frame intermediate its ends, the free end of said lever being connected with the projecting end of the said piston rod, a retractile spring secured to said lever, a pedal forming a bell crank pivotally secured to said frame, and means connecting said lever with the inner arm of said bell crank.
2. A foot pump, comprising a frame affording a base, an oscillating cylinder having its one end pivotally secured to one end of said frame, and a piston rod projecting from the opposite end of said cylinder, a
lever ffulcruine'd to said freine, intermediate its ends, the free end of said lever being connected with the projecting'end of the said piston rod, a retractilespi'ingsecured to said lever, a. pedal forming :t bell crank pivotally secured to said frame, and means connecting saidlever between its free end andits fulcrum'withthe inner arm 4of Said bell crank.
