ALEXANDER W. FINLAYSON, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN;
METHOD OF FORIVIIN G- RADIATOR-TUBES.
Specification of Letters Patent.Y Patented May V1919.
Application led October 8, 1917. Serial No. 195,369.
To all 'whom it' may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. YFIN- LAYsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, rpsiding at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have 1nvented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Methods of Forming Radiator- Tubes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to the manufacture of radiator tubes and similar hollow articles from cast metal, and in which one orv more baffle plates are cast in the structure. It is the object of the invention to provide a method of supporting the baffle plates during the casting and also to hold them in fixed position after the casting is made. To this end the invention comprises the novel method or process, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a longitudinal section through the radiator tube;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the battle-support-ing tube with the baffles thereon;
F ig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a core having the baffles and their supportingtube embedded therein;
Fig. 4 is a section through the mold showing the cast radiator tube therein;
Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. l showing the manner of closing the perforations in the baffle-supporting tube; and
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through the radiator tube.
The structure which is formed by my improved process comprises a hollow tubular member A having a series of enlargements B therein extending laterally therefrom. C is a central supporting member on which are mounted baffle-plates D, these being arranged within the enlargements B and serving to interrupt the direct passage through the tube and to compel a lateral circulation around the baffie.
To form such an article it is necessary to provide a suitable core for forming the hollow tube and also to arrange the baffles in the core and to connect them with the supporting rod C. This I accomplish by rst providing a tube C', preferably perforated, and having mounted thereon a series of baffle plates D inpredetermined spaced relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 2. This structure is then placed in a suitable core box and the core molded thereon, as shown in Fig. 3, the core E covering both the baffles and the tube C but leaving projecting portions C2 of the baffles for anchoring in the casting. The core is then placed in an outer mold F as shown in Fig. 4, and the metal is cast, therearound, embedding the projecting portions C2 of the ba'liies and integrating therewith. During this operation the vapor generated by the heat of the metal on the munication through the tube C from one side of the baille to the other.
By forming the structure as described, the baffles are securely fastened and accurately placed within the hollow tubes and are protected from the heat ofthe metal during the casting operation by being embeddedin the core. The fact that the core is centrally vented throughout its length prevents the entrapping of gases which might render the casting defective, and the subsequent placing of the imperforate tubeV within the perforated tube cuts off communication fron one side to the other of the baffle.
Vhat Iv claim as my invention is:
l. The method of forming a hollow casting having a baffle plate therein, comprising the mounting of the baffie plate upon a supporting rod, embedding said rod and bafl'le plate in a core for forming the chamber within the hollow article, casting the article about said core so as to form an anchor for said rod and baffle, and removing the core, leaving the baffle supported within the chamber. Y
2. The method of forming a hollow casting having baffles therein, comprising the mounti of a baffle upon a support, embedding thlelgbaflie and its support in a core fashioned to forml the recess of said hollow body, casting the hollow body about said core with a portion engaging said baflie tojanchor the same, and removing the core leaving the baffle supported within the recess.
V3. The method of forming a hollovT casting having baffles therein, comprisingthe mounting of a baiie upon a perforated tubular support, embedding said bafiie and support in a core fashioned to form the recess in the hollow body, casting the hollow body about said core, the perforated tubular support forming a vent for the vapors generated and a portion of said casting anchoring said baffles, removing the core, and closing the perforations in said tubular support.
4. The method of forming a hollow casting With` ,baffles vtherein, comprising the mounting of a ba'ie upon a perforated .tubular support, embedding said baffle and supportin acorefashioned toA form the recessfin the hollow peasting, casting the body about said core, said perforated tubular support forming a vent, for the vapors generated in thecore and a.; portion of the casting engaging said baii'ie to anchor the samel removing the core .from the casting and teleseopically engaging an imperforate tube with said perforated tubular support to close said l perforations.
5; yThe method of forming a radiator tube having a series of enlargements and baffles therein, comprising the mounting of the baffles in predetermined spaced relation upon a perforated tubular support, embedding said baffles and support in a core fashioned to form the chamber Within said tube, casting the tube about said core, said perforated tubular support constituting avent for the gases generated in the core and a portion .of the casting engaging said baiiies to anchor the same, removing the core, and telescopicallyl engaging an imperforate tube Within the perforated tubular member to close the perforations thereof.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
ALEXANDER W. FINLAYSON.
