The body part 21 of the core has its large end adjoining the base 2O and the base is provided with a taper or draft allowing the core to be withdrawn from the molded post from the base end. In the preferred construction, the core is formed of metal, for instance sheet metal, and in this case the core parts are hollow. In accordance with my invention, a plug` 22 closes the small or outer end portion of the core body 21 as shown in the drawings. The plug is preferably somewhat removed from the end of the body so that a socket B is formed in the end of the core body to receive a guide part on the mold cover 11 and/or various tools or devices as set forth in my above-mentioned co-pending application. The plug is fixed in the core body so that it can be engaged in driving or forcing the core out of the casting. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the core is shown in position Where a projection on the cover 11 extends into the socket B to hold the core body in position in the opening A.
The core carrier 12 is preferably in the form of a flat plate adapted to be attached to the base end of the mold body 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The carrier 12 is adapted to be mounted in a definite position on the base through bolts 25, or the like. In accordance with this invention, the base portion 20 of the core is attached to the carrier 12, preferably permanently attached. I provide one or more openings 26 in the core carrying plate 12, through which the material to be cast can be filled into the mold. In the drawings, I have shown a construction wherein there are several openings 26 which communicate with the opening A in the body of the mold when the core carrier 12 is in place, as shown in Fig. 1. Further, the opening or openings 26 in the core carrier are located to be closed by the mounting plate 13 upon the mounting plate being arranged in place, as shown in Fig. 1.
The core structure that I have provided is not only a particularly simple and an inexpensive structure, but is also very convenient to handle. It is to be noted that the core, when in place, is effectively supported at both' ends so that it is positively held in a predetermined position in the space A in the mold body. Further, as above pointed out, my construction allows the mold to be filled with the core set in position and permits ofthe core being withdrawn from the cast body without disturbing the casting in the mold body l0.
The reinforcement l5 provided by my inf s vention includes, generally, a plurality of longitudinal rods 28, foot brackets 29 on the lower or base ends of the rods, and one or more transverse ties 30 extending between the rods. The rods 28 may be formed of suitable reinforcing bars such as are used in reinforcing concrete structures, and the like, it being preferred to use twisted, square bars or the equivalent. In practice, I may use any desired number of bars 28, it being understood that the number and weight of bars will depend on the character of reinforcement desired. 'Ihe foot brackets 29 are fixed, for instance, welded, or otherwise positively secured, to the base ends of the rods 28, and are formed to have projecting parts 31 adapted to be attached to the base end of the mold body 10. The upper or head ends of the bars 28 preferably project from the finished post and therefore are proportioned to project into suitable sockets or openings provided in the cover plate 11 of the mold body. My construction is such that the head ends of the rods 28 do not have to be made tight in the cover 1 1 of the mold, in fact, it is preferred that they be allowed to extend freely into the,
openings of cover 11 so that the cover merely operates to space them apart and not hold them longitudinally. The transverse tie or ties 30 may be in the nature of wires wound around the several rods 28 in a manner such as I have illustrated in the drawings. The tie 30, when properly applied to the rods 28, ties them in or together so that they have little or no tendency to expand or move out radially in the event the mold structure in which the reinforcement is spaced is rotated in the course of manufacture of the post.
U The spacer 16 provided by my invention is in the nature of a ring or annular member adapted to engage the several rods 28 and to surround the body 21 of the core so that it operates to definitely hold and space the rods 28 with reference to the core and therefore in the space A of the mold body 10. My invention provides a ring 32 adapted to iit around the core body 21 with substantial clearance and made comparatively narrow or thin so that it occupies comparatively little space in a radial direction in the mold space A. In accordance with my invention, the ring 32 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs 33 adapted to engage the core body 21 so that the ring 32 is definitely, for instance, concentrically, related to the core body. Further, my invention provides a plurality of outwardly projecting lugs 34 on the ring 32, the lugs 34 being provided to hold the bars 28 of the reinforcement. In the preferred construction, the lugs or projection 34 are provided with openings to pass the bars 28 as clearly shown in Fig. A of the drawings. In the drawings, I have disclosed an arrangement wherein there is a single spacing ring embodied in the structure or mold insert. It is to be understood, however, that any desired number of spacing rings may be provided as clrcumstances may require.
From the foregoing description, it will be` apparent that my invention provides a structure or combination of parts for insertion of a mold body whereby the cast structure isy cored to have an opening in a definite position, and whereby a suitable reinforcing structure is embodied in the casting in a definite position without requiring tensioning or other straining, such as is liable to interfere with the proper bond between the reinforcement and cast material.
Having described only a typical preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the specific details set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any changes or variations that may appear to those skilled in the artor fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An insert for a post mold including, a plurality of longitudinal rods, foot brackets fixed to the base ends of the rods,ties connecting the rods, and a ring having openings holding the rods in definite spaced relation intermediate their ends, the ring having spaced projecting lugs with `openings to pass the rods.
2. An insert for a post mold including, a plurality of longitudinal rods, foot brackets fixed to the base ends of the rods, ties connecting the rods, and a ring having openings holding the rods in definite spaced relation intermediate their ends, the ring having spaced inwardly projecting lugs and spaced outwardly projecting lugs, the outwardly projecting lugs being provided with openings to hold the rods. v
