CASING FOR CYLINDRIGAL DSTRIBUTING-VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

King of Great Brit- England, have gards wear for cylindrical valves, whether type, and whether for vrotary or reciprocating action; it also einof sleeve, or piston braces means for cooling such a casing when used upon an internal combustion engine.
The object of the invention is to construct a casing of the character described in contact with which the valve works so that the casing may be diametrically adjusted either for itting, or to take up wear, and further to provide such adjustment in combination `with means orkeeping the said casing cool.
The invention is applicable to casings ot both plain and Vjacketed character, and l attain the objects desired by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the invention with a water cooling jacket as adapted to the rotating sleeve valve described in my concurrent application for a patent in America, Serial No. 124,993, to which it is o particular ap plication.
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the water jacket; Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1, showing the line of the divisions; Fig. 3 is an end view showing the connecting pipe across the divided casing in elevation; and
.Figa 4 is a section through the connecting ipe. j l p Referring rst to Figs. land 2, itwill be seen that transverse divisions a and b are formed, extending` about half-way around at either end of the port region of the` casing in the upper side away from the ports, such as E, Fig. 3, which lead to the cylinders A, B, C, D, and that these divisions are connected by the longitudinal division c; bosses` d, e are formed at intervals along this joint c by which the adjoining sections can be drawn together, owing to the flexibility of the material of the casing, and thus a diametrical adjustment is secured, which allows of a small variation suiiicient to obtain ac curate fitting of the casing around the ported sleeve F which rotates within it,

Referring to Figs. 3 and Ll, 7s is a pipe formed integrally with the outer sidezJ of the jacket space y' and crossing the division or joint c, where itis provided with a flexible. joint ring-Z, which serves to retain the water, the bolts f, f also tightening this joint at the same time, as the division c.
u The pipe lc shown' in the drawing connects the cylinder jacket G with the jacket space y' by a connection not shown and the Voutlet from y' is by a special pipe shown at 'm1, Fig. 2, which is peculiar to the special type 'ot valve sleeves shown. The water circulation thus proceeds from the cylinder jackets at Gr, through an elongated port p to one side of the jacket space j and overthe pipe the adjoining ends of the water jacket at the joint c are formed integrally with the sides, the jacket at the transverse portions a, Z) being formed in the same way.
The drawings show a casing withv rigid extensions Lbeyond the divided section, the ends of which are also integral opposite the transverse divisions a, l); in many cases it will be sufficient if the rigid parts of the s casing stop below the points where the transverse divisions ci, l) start, leaving the ends of the joint 0 and of the jacket `then open; in other cases the rigid portions will only be or" the same length as the divided zone, say,
when it is simply required to inclose the port. area of the valve, in which case the division o will wholly divide the casing in a longitudinal direction; correct iit is of most importance 4over this region and much difliculty has been experienced hitherto in making rotary valves gas tight there. Where possible the longitudinal division is located on the opposite side oi the casing to that through which ports are cut. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a valve casing, the combination with a Vworking cylinder for the reception of the valve having ports in its periphery in connection with the cylinders of the engineto which the casing is attached, of a side thereii diyid'cd' by means of a fine space' sepad 7c to the other side, it being noted that rating the material of such side in a longitudinal direction approximately over the region of the port area and partially in a transverse direction at the ends of this region, means for slightly contracting the side thus rendered flexible and fastening it in a rigid manner, and rigid cylindrical ends at each extremity of the casing beyond the transverse divisions, forth.
2. In a valve casing` the combination with a working cylinder for the reception of the valve having' ports in its periphery in connection with the cylinders of the engine to which it is attached, of a jacket l surrounding the said cylinder, a side of the said cylinder and jacket divided by means cit a line space separating it longitudinally, a passage connected with the jacket. on one side of the division, a passage connected ywith the jacketon the opposite side of the division the ends of the said passages being located at the division somewhat apart but opposite each other, flexible packing material between the said ends, lugs on each side of the said division, and screws therethrough adapted to contract the cylinder slightly utilizing the flexibility of the material so as to compress the flexible packing between the ends of the connecting passages.
3. In a valve casing, the combination with a working cylinder for the reception of the valve having ports in its periphery in connection with the cylinders of the engine to which it is attached, oi' a jacket partially surrounding the said cylinder, a side of the said cylinder and jacket divided by means of a ne space separating the material in a substantially as set partially v longitudinal direction approximately over the region or' the port area and partially in a transverse direction at the ends of this region, a passage connected with the jacket on one side ot the division, a passage connected with the jacket on the opposite side of the division the ends of the said passages being located at the division so1newhat apart but opposite each other, flexible packing material between the said ends, lugs on each side of the said division, screws therethrough adapted to contract the cylinder slightlyv utilizing the flexibility of the material so as to compress the flexible packing between the ends of the connecting passages, and rigid cylindrical ends at each extremity of the casing beyond the transverse divisions. substantially as set forth.
l; The combination, in a valve casing, of a working cylindrical portion for the reception of the valve. embracing one or more ports through one side in connection With the cylinders of the engine to which the casing .is attached, with a jacket partiallyT surrounding the said cylindrical portion, a side of the cylindrical portion and jacket opposite the ported side oitl the former di- `vided by means oi a line space separating it longitudinally, passages connected to the said jacket and having each other on each side of the said division, flexible packing' between the passage ends and solid packing in the side division, and means for slightly contracting and fastening together the sides of the latter so as to form a -rigid connection thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
