To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY-W. CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, and' a resident of Fremont, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have made certain new and useful Gas-Engine Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valves particu-4 larly adapted for use in connection with gas engines, my object being to provide a rotary valve of novel construction whereby it will be self-balancing and self-grinding. The means by which I accomplish the above object are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through a gas engine provided-with Referring now tolthese figures, A designates the cylinder of a conventional upright gas engine, which is provided at its upper end with a rounded lwall A', the sides of which are provided with circularopenings and internal threads. This rounded wall A', as may be plainly seen, forms a substantially 'annular valve chamber a' in open communication with the upper end of the working chamber a of the engine, in which is located the. usual piston B connected by a pitman Z2 to the lower crank shaft C, this latter being provided eXteriorly of the engine cylinder with a sprocket wheel c. The axis of the annular valve chamber a extends at right angles to that of the engine cylinder a, and through the bearings of caps Dand D', the latter of which is provided with an exhaust port d at one side of its center, and with an intake port d' above its center. These caps D-D' threadedly engage within the side openings of the valve casing formed by the rounded wall A', as before mentioned, and through their bearings extends the rotary valve stem Improvements inv or shaft E' upon which is secured the valve E positioned between the caps. In assembling the parts, caps D and D are in ythe first instance adjusted so that their inner surfaces engage the outer side surfaces of the valve flanges e and e' snugly and evenly whereby to prevent'leakage, the
valve being thereafter perfectly balanced `m operation by virtue of thepressure whicl'i" is freely circulated entirely therearound from the working cylinder of the engine, and presses evenly against the inner surfaces of the ianges e and e'.
The spark plug G is threaded in the top l of the valve casing, as shown in Figs. 1 and '2, and is controlled by make and break devices indicated at G', on the valve spindle or shaft E', and due to this fact I pref-.
