SELF-LOCKING MAT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. VAN DERBEGK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Self-Locking Mats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a self locking mat, which is adapted to be locked to the running board of vehicles. It is particularly applicable to the running boards of automobiles, and may be used for various other purposes.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents the side elevation of an automobile with a front view of the invention; Fig. 2 shows an enlarged top plan view of the mat partly broken away with a fragmentary portion of the running board of an automobile; Fig. 3 is a side view and section of Fig. 2 as on the line 3, 3; Fig. 4 shows a front view of Fig. 2 partly broken away and a section as on the line 4, 4; Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary portion of Fig. 2 with a modification and Fig. 6 is a side view of Fig. 5.

The mat comprises a frame preferably of metal consisting of the front member 20, rear member 21 and

side members

22 and 23. Each of said members consists of the tubular portion 26 and the angular pocket 27 with the cover 28.

The body portion of the mat indicated at 30, may consist of woven fibrous material, rubber, wire mesh or any other suitable material. The body portion 30 is securely held in place by locating its ends in the pockets 27 and then forcing down the covers 28. When the covers 28 are forced down, they pull the body portion 30 taut in lace over the tubular portions 26. A flexible U shaped locking bar is shown to consist of the longitudinal member 32, the cross legs 33 that terminate in the helical loops 34, the return legs 35, the vertical legs 36 and the clamping legs 37, that enter and are secured in the tubular portions 26. An automobile is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 40. The running board in this instance is shown at 41, with the depending front flange 42. To look the mat in place on the running board it is forced thereon by springing the

legs

33 and 35 over the flange 42 and forcing the member 32 against the inner face of the flange 42. The resilience of the

legs

33 and 35 will bring the loops 34 against the lower face of the running board 41 and lock the mat in place, the outer face of the flange 42 bearing against the legs 36. 7

In case the running board is devoid of the flange 42, the members 32 and loops 34 bear up against the running board and the legs 36 bear against the outer face thereof.

In the modification shown in Figs. '5 and 6 the

20, 21 and 23 of the frame are shown. The U shaped locking bar is indicated with its longitudinal member 52 similar to 32, and one of its cross legs 53, simllar to 33. The latter has extending therefrom the rear member 54 in place of the loop 34. From the member 54 extends the inclined return leg 55 similar to 35. A verticalleg 56 extends from the leg 55, and a clamping leg 57 similar to 37 extends from the leg 56. The leg 57 'enters' and is fastened in the tubular portion 26. The body of t tlae mat in this modification is indicated at Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:

The combination in a mat, of a frame, tubular portions formed at one of the edges of each member of the frame, a pocket formed at the other edge of each of said members, a cover for each pocket, a body portion for the mat bearing upon the said tubular portions and entering the accompanying pockets, the said cover forcing said body portion into said pocket and securing it therein. 7
