EPHRAIM H. SVVEETSER, OFSALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. i3,4i50,dated August l3, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Blacking and Brush Holder, invented by EPHRAIM H. Swnnrsnn, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the construction of blacking-box and daub-brush holders, of the character patented to me March 26, 1872, No.- 124,984, which said improvements will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved blacking-box and brush holder, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the bottom part of the hold or with a box of blacking in it.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The bottom part A is merely a tin or other sheet-metal cup-shaped device in the form of a blacking-box, except the cover; but a little larger or different sizes may be used for boxes of blacking, B, of different sizes, which they are designed to hold, the same being fastened in them by being clamped therein by a screw, 0, which, in this example, is a thumb-screw, for convenience in turning it. The top or cover D for said part A is in the form of a frustum of a cone above the part E, with a head or circular rib,'F, swelled out from the side, say about half-way from the bottom to the top of D, which said rib or bead is provided to facilitate lifting and holding the apparatus by the thumb and fingers, and constitutes a kind of annular handle, by which the said apparatus may be readily taken up, which it is very difficult to do when said part D is constructed on a regular taper, as it has heretofore been made. I
In this example I have arranged the partE to fit over the outside of the part A instead of inside, as heretofore, for preventing the smearing of the lower edge with blackin g, which occurred, when it fittedinside, by the accumulation of blackin g inA, so that it smeared the bench on which it was setwhile using the blacking. Itherefore arrange it to fit on the outside, as shown, for avoiding such smearing, which is very objectionable, which said arrangement is the more necessary for a cover of the form which I necessarily use to hold the brush as I do, because a cover of suchforln cannot be so readily turnedupside down and set on the bench on the top end as a cylindrical cover can be. I make the bottom A slightly conical, and the part E of the cover slightly contracted from the top downward, so that they bind snugly together when, connected and insure the holding of the part A bythe part'E D. I now propose to providea little groove, G, in the periphery of the brushblock H, which, in other respects, is like the one described in the aforesaid patent granted to me, and above the said groove, at I, I make the said block of such size that it has to be tilted sidewise slightly to be pressed through the top, by springing the latter outward slightly, so that when said upper part has passed through the top to the groove G the said part above the groove will hold the brush, as shown in Fig. 1, completely closing the top D, but not so tightly but that a smart blow on the top of the brush-handle will releasgit by forcing itdown through the top when it is wantedfor use. Theapparatus is designed both for shoe and stove blacking and brushes or other polishing matters.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bottom A, box B, screw 0, cover D E F, and grooved block G H, combined, con structed, and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
' EPHM. H. SWEETSEB.
