Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEANDER S. VOODBURY, OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHALK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming partei Letters Patent No. 130,399, dated August 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDEE S. Woon- BURY, of Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghal k or Lead Holders; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forining part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is an end elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the saine, x x Fig. l being the section line.
The object of this invention is to obtain a holder for lead or chalk, and it is designed especially to be used in marking lumber where the rapidity and pressure with which it is used requires that it should be held perfectly rigid, and yet allow the lead to be closely used up.
The invention consists of a metallic case, b,
Fig.l 2, made to suit the size of the lead to be held. This case is slotted on its sides, as shown at s. On the other two sides and at the end are inclined projections m, while at the other end a thread is out to receive the nut d.
Around the case b is a sleeve, a, which slides freely back and forth, and upon one end of which is a ring, n, the inside of which is beveled to correspond with the incline of the projection m. Upon the other end of this sleeve is a ring or collar, e, against which the nut d presses.
The operation is as follows: The pencil or lead P being inserted the nut l is screwed up against the collar c, which forms a part of thel sleeved this draws the holderbinto the sleeve a until the projections m, being drawn into the ring n, compresses the holder firmly around the lead, while the friction of the nut upon the collar c and upon the thread of the screw e makes it impossible for the lead to become loose. rlhe hole g in the nut d is intended for the insertion of a handle.
I claimrlhe metallic ease b with inclined projections m and screw e, in combination with sleeve a and nut d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LEANDER S. VOODBURY.
