PENCIL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 579,596, dated March 30, 1897. Application filed November 27, 1896. Serial No. 613,685. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARL E. MATHIESEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pencils, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specilication.
My invention relates to a pencil having a movable lead. My object is to provide an improved construction of that type of pencil in which the lead may be moved longitudinally to project from the end of the pencil when in use and drawn into the casing when not in use.
In accordance with my invention the casing comprises a tube having a threaded bore, within which is placed a threaded traveler or nut to which the end of the lead is attached, the traveler or nut being rotated to advance or retract the lead by means of a rotating cap or sleeve placed at one end of the casing and carrying a longitudinally-extending key which engages the traveler in all positions of the latter.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure l is a sectional view of a pencil embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached View of the traveler. Fig. 3 is anend view of the traveler. Fig. 4t is a sectional view of a modification.

The casing a of the pencil is provided with a threaded bore, within which moves a traveler or nut l), the periphery of which is threaded to engage the threads on the casing, whereby the-traveler, when rotated, is caused to move longitudinally through the bore of the casing. Upon the traveler h is mounted a socket Z9', in which the end of the lead cis lclamped or otherwise secured, the opposite end of the lead passing through the opening in the cap cl on the end of the casing. Upon the opposite end of the casing is provided a rotatable cap or handle c, and to this handle the ends of the parallel rods ff/ are secured, the rods passing through holes in the traveler t and being secured at the opposite ends to a ring f2, which surrounds the lead c.
When the cap e is rotated to the right, the rods ff engage and rotate the traveler t, causing the same to advance the traveler and move the lead forward to project from the end of the pencil. Vhen the cap is rotated to the left, the traveler is caused to move in the opposite direction to move the end of the lead into the casing.
In Fig. 4t the cap (l, through which the end of the lead is adapted to project, constitutes the rotating handle, the ends ot' the rods ff being secured thereto, while the ring f2, to which the opposite ends are secured, is at the opposite end of the casing.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a pencil, the combination with a casing having a threaded bore, of a traveler moving therein and having a threaded periphery to engage the threads of the casing, a mounting for the lead of the pencil provided upon said traveler, a rotatable handle at one end of said casing, and a number of longitudinallyextending rods rotating with said rotatable handle and engaging said traveler to rotate the same, substantially as described.
2. In a pencil the combination with the casing a provided with the threaded bore, of the threaded traveler b, the mounting for the lead of the pencil provided thereon, the rotatable handle at one end of the casing, the rods ff secured at one end thereto and the ring f2 to.
