My invention has for itsobject to provide a comparatively simple and `inexpensive, yet a highly efficient and durable adjuster for storm sashes and the like which may readily be detached during the warmer months, provision being made whereby little obstruction to compact storing of the sashes is caused.
With the foregoing general object in view,
the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is 'a vertical section of a window I and the storm sash thereof, showing the application of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the device extended;
Fig. 3 is a similar view but illustrating the adjuster in retracted position;
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail vertical sections on the planes indicated by the lines 4 4, 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Fig. 2;
Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section on the plane designated by the line 7-71of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line 8-8 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 9 is a perspective View of one of the toggle links; and
Fig. 10 is a perspective showing the support for one end of the toggle link structure.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates an outer pair of toggle links, while 2 has reference to an inner pair of such links, the two sets of links being pivoted together at 3 to form an extensible and retractable frame. The ends of the links 2 opposite the pivots 3, are connected by a vertical pivot 4 which also pivots them to an arched support 5 whose arms 6 engage the arms 7 of a U-shaped attaching bracket 8 adapted to be secured to the window sill or to any other appropriate part of the frame. A pivot pin 9, preferably in the form of a screw, connects the arms 6 and 7 as shown most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, this p1n serving to permit the necessary angling of the bracket 8, according to the inclination ofthe window sill, and also acting to permit swinging of the support 5 as the device is adjusted. The screw 9 also serves as a detachable connection between the bracket and the support 5 when removing the adjuster.
The inner ends of the links 2 cross each other and are vextended a suitable distance beyond the pivot 4,`one of said ends being increased in width and provided with an arcuate slot l0 which is concentric with said pivot. A clamping plate 11 is mounted at one end on the pivot 4 and contacts with the side of said widened end, opposite that engaged -by the other link 2, and a clamping bolt 12 rises from the extended end of the last named link through said slot 10 and through the clamping plate ll, said bolt having a wing nut 13. By loosening this nut, the adjuster may be extended as shown in Fig. 2 or retracted as depicted in Fig. l3 and tightening of the nut will hold the device in adjusted position.
The outer ends of the toggle links 1 are received between the upper and lower ears 14 of a substantially U shaped supporting member 15 and a vertical pivot 16 is passed through said ears and links as shown clearly in the several figures. The pivot 16 also passes through a hook 17 which is provided lfor securing the adjuster in retracted position as shown in Fig. 3, said hook engaging a head 4a formed on the upper end of the pivot 4.
The supporting member 15 passes through an opening 18 in the outwardly stamped central portion 19 of an attaching `plate 20 which is secured to the sash, and said supporting member is provided with oppositely extending lugs 21 which are received in the shallow socket formed by stamping the plate 20 as described. The edge wall of the opening 18 is formed with a notch 22 andwhen, the entire adjuster is turned a quarter of a revolution, after first removing the pivot pin 9, this notch permits removal of the lugs 21, so that the entire adjuster may be which are featured in Figs.V 6, 7,8 and 10, are received rather loosely in the shallow socket above referred to; these lugs; therefore not only affording a quickly detachable connection vbetween ythe adjusterv and thev sash, but serving as pivots to permit the angle between the sash and the vadjuster to vary as the former is swung inwardly and outwardly.. During this movement, the pivot pin 9 also comes into play as above suggested.
The device as a whole is simple and inexpensive, yet is highly efficient and durable. Nhen in use, the wing nut V13 and the bolt 12 will hold the device'in Vany of its numerous adjusted positions and when -entire]v closed, the hook 17 is used as a positive lock. During the warmer months, w'h-en the storm sash 'is removed, the adjuster may easily be detached by removal of the screw 9, it being then only necessary to turn the device a suitable distance to permit disengagement of the support l. from the attach- Y ing plateI 20. f
Particular emphasis is laid upon the fact that this plate is substantially flat. This is highly advantageous, since the plate does not therefore furnishv any noticeable obstruction to compact storing 'of the 'sashes The bracket S may remain upon the window 'sill or. maybe detached and -again connected to the support 5 by means ofthe screw 9.
In either case, a plurality of separated parts do not exist and thus danger-of loss is prevented.
Since probably the best results are obtained from the several specic Adetails shown and described, these details are preferably employed, but I wish 'it understood that within' the scope ofthe invention as claimed,numerous-minor changes may well be made.
I claim:

A sash adjuster comprising an yeXtensible member and means for connecting one end thereof detachably to the window frame, a supporting member to which the other end of said eXtensible member is connected, said support-ing member having lateral lugs eX- tending transversely ofl said Amember and projecting oppositely from the longitudinal center line thereof, an attaching plate in a plane rtransverse to the aforementioned center' line and adapted to be secured to the sash, said plate having an outwardly bulged end thereof detachably to the window frame,
