.ADELARD PLOUFFE, or WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
Y cannon-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed August 29, 1918. Serial No. 251,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELARD PLOUFFE, a citizen of Canada, and a subject of the King of England, and a resident of WVoonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crutch-I-Iandles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to crutch handles.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the crutch may be effectively used without necessarily subjecting the side of the wearers coat or similar garment to frictional contact with the sleeve thereof. i
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above mentioned character a means whereby the device may be quickly installed upon a crutch of the conventional type without changing or altering any of the parts thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and reliablein use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the device embodying my invention installed upon a crutch,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a bracket, the crutch being removed therefrom,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device, and,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 1-4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates a crutch having standards 6 and a crutch head 7. To the crutch 5 at a distance from the crutch head 7 substantially equal to the users arm as shown in Fig. 1 there is secured a bracket, the bracket being clearly shown in Fig. 2 and indicated as a whole by the numeral 8. The bracket 8 comprises an elongated metallic support 9 having secured at its ends a pair of flanges 10. To each of the flanges 10 there is secured a pair of L-shaped ears 11, the ears 11 being adapted to engage the standards 6 to which the device as a Whole is secured by means of screws or the like as shown at 12.
To each of the flanges 10 substantially intermediate the ends thereof there is secured apair of wings 13, each of which wings are provided with a ferrule 14, the ferrules 14 being adapted to receive the ends of a grip 15.
By proportioning, construction and arrangement of the elements which I have shown, I provide a device particularly adaptedto be installed upon a crutch of the type disclosed. By the use of a device constructed in accordance with my inve11- tion one is enabled to effectively use a crutch without necessarily subjecting the side of the wearers coat or similar garment to frictionally contact with the sleeve thereof as will be readily understood when considering the diagrammatic illustration as shown in Fig. 1.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. The combination with a crutch having a pair of standards spaced from each other, of an elongated support bridging the space between said standards, a pair of flanges carried by said support, a pair of wings carried by said flanges, a hand grip having its ends secured to said wings, ears carried by said flanges, the standards of said crutch being adapted to enter between said ears and flanges, and means for retaining said standards between said ears and flanges.
2. The combination With a crutch having a pair of standards spaced from each other, of an elongated support bridging the space between said standards, a pair of flanges carried by said support, a pair of Wings carried by said flanges, a ferrule carried by each of said Wings, a hand grip having its ends retained Within said ferrules, ears carried by said flanges, the standardsof said crutch being adapted to enter between said 10 ears and flanges, and means for retaining said standards between said ears and flanges.
ADELARD PLOUFFE.
