Description

UNITED STATES PATENT orrron SEM SOKOL, or sourn :Bosron, MAssAcHusnrTs.
anner- LATE. I i
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that 1, SEM SoKoL, a citizen of Russia, residing at South Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusettshave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in breast lates and has as its special object the provision of a device which is engageable with the limbs and body of a person, protecting the same against damage during the performance of certain mechanical operations in an effective manner.
A further object is to provide a breast plate having engaged with it substantially unyielding cross elements and a parallel cushion element, such plates being used by mechanics, when performing laborious operations in which parts of the mechanism or articles operated upon are necessarily thrust against the body of the operator.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View showin a breast plate made in accordance with t e invention all parts being extended in full length.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the breast plate from the rear and indicating the manner in which the engaging straps are secured.
The front upper portion constituting the body of the breast plate 10 is preferably formed of leather or a firm textile fabric, from which extend side elements 11 and 12, spaced apart and having between them openings through which the arms may be extended, these side elements being joined at their outer ends by vertical strips 14 and 15, the latter having extending straps 16' and 17 the same being a continuation of the sides 11 and 12 and secured in the ends of the straps 16 and 17 are eyes 18, adapted to be engaged in similar hooks or eyes 19, extending out from the opposite vertical connection 14. Similar hooks 20 extend downwardly from the cross extension 12 for purposes which will be further on described.
The lower portion of the flexible guard body 10 is turned upwardly as indicated at 52-52,-
ends being closed and the space 23 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented I l lay 13, 1919, Application filed Jui 5, 1913. serial Nd. 4 ,347:
betweenthe surrounding walls filled with a i fibrous yielding material which may vary according to the purposes to which the breast plate is put, the object being to present a cushioned surface against which pressure or blows may be absorbed without doing damage to the person using the same.
Secured to the lower longitudinally extending edge of the cushioned element 22 is a bent cross strip 24, engaged by hinges 25 with a horizontal cross plate 26, preferably made of wood and substantially unyielding, the same being adapted to intercept blows which might otherwise contact with a vulnerable portion of the body.
Engaged to cross plate 26 by rivets 28 or like fastenings is another strip of flexible material 30, provided with openings 31 through which the lower limbs may pass, while extending down from the side of the strip 30 are strap-like portions 32, furnished at their extremities with hooks 33 engageable with the corresponding hooks 20 attached to the straps 12, so that when the breast plate is adjusted upon a persons body it may be firmly engaged, it being understood that the size and shape of the device is suited to the individual who will wear the same.
lVhile the foregoin description, taken in connection with the crawing, merely shows an article for the purpose described it is understood that the showing is descriptive only and that the device is subject to such modifications as are compatible with the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a breast plate, the combination with a body portion having arm holes in the sides thereof, and leg openings in the lower portion, of straps by which said body portion may be secured, other straps extending below said body portion, and means for engaging all of said straps in operative position.
2. In a breast plate, the combination with a body, an apron depending therefrom and means formed in the sides of said body engageable with the arms of the wearer, of straps integral with said apron, means for securing said straps to said body and a cushion combined with said body, said cushion extending transversely thereacross at the front. a
