Description

M. l. DU BOIS.
CONTAINER.
APPLlCATlON FILED DEC. 27.19M-
Patented May 13, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I Manor no o s, or rassa nnw innsnr, assienoa To ,rAssAic vinranwann V coMrAnY, orrAssAIc, NEWJERSEY, a CORPORATION ornnw JERSEY.
. To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known t11a4tI7 MaARGY Jd DU Bois, a.
of-New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements "1n Containers, of which the following is a SPEClfiCatlOIL.
the class {of containers commonly called boxes, cans, or tin cans, which are provided with removable covers at their open ends, but when such cans are made of rectangular shape. their side walls are liable to be pressed in adjacent to the mouth: of the container, whereby the contents may sift and ,leak through the joint between the flange of the cover and the wall of the container.
The object of my invention istostiffenor reinforce the walls of the contalner adja- 'set into a groove in the inner walls of the container, whereby the reinforce is retained in place while bracing said walls.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then ointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure l is a side View of a' container embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view, the cover being removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section substantially on the line 3, 3, in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section substantially on the line 4, 4:, in Fig. 3. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates a container which may be in the form of a well known tin'can having an open mouth, and at 2 is a CONTAINER.

an ordinary manner. Adjacent to the open mouth of the canand within the same is a relnforce 3, which may be made of wire and bentrtosnugly fit the walls of the container. The container illustrated is shown as having anrinner seam at 1 which may be of any suitable=form, andthe ends of the reinforce My invention relates to improvements in reinforce within the container. Whenthe reinforce 3 isfitted in a rectangular con tamer said lBlIlfOlCG 18 so shaped that its portions 3 fit snugly in a lengthwise man ner for a suitable distance along and against the inner faces of the walls of the container, and the portions 3 intermediate the portions 3 extend angularly with respect to the adj acent'portions 3 and thus in a direction somewhat diagonally with respect to and spaced from the corners of the container, whereby the parts 3" serve as braces between the parts 3 additionally strengthening the reinforce and serving to resist inward pressure thereon. The walls of the container are provided with an inner groove 4 which may be formed by beading the ma terial of the container adjacent to its open mouth, providing a seat for the reinforce 3 to retain the latter in position within the container. The reinforce may be placed within the container by pressing it therein, as the walls will expand sufficiently to enable the reinforce to enter the groove 4, and the walls will contract upon the reinforce to retain the latter in position. The groove or bead 4: is shown in the walls of the container at a point below the flange of the cover, and the reinforce 3 is correspondingly located,
whereby such walls at the mouth of the conkinds of tin cans, and particularly those of rectangular variety, where the wall of the can adjacent the open mouth may be readily pressed in permitting thereby leakage or sifting of the contents of the can between such wall and the cover. With my improve- ,ments the stiffening of the wall of the can mouth serves to prevent such bending of the Patented May 13, 19 19.
Wall; thereby to avoidsuch leakage, and this is particularly advantageous where tight" fitting covers are applied at the mouths of t1n cans, the flanges of which do not so readily press inwardly as the walls of the can.
improvements are simple and cheap" in constructlon, since the rein-force may be.
made of wire set in the groove or bead of theibody" of the container-without requiring solder or other means to retain the reinforce 111 osition, and also since the 1 reinforee fol, lowsto some 'extentthe contour of the container and does not necessarily extend transversely across the same", thereby not in terferin'g' with the ready'filling or emptying" of the" container.
Having now'described' my invention what I claim is:- 1. A rectangular container having a beaded groove therein adjacent to its'oipen mouth, and a reinforce within said groove and entirely within thecontainer', "portions of the reinforce extending along the inner wall'sof the container and portions of the reinforce extending between the first named portions thereof andspaced from the corners'of the container withinthe'sairie to reinforce the walls between said corners.
2. A rectangular container having a beaded groove therein adjacent to its open mouth and" substantially parallel thereto, and having an' interior longitudinal seam along one Wall, combined with a reinforce having portions in said groove bearing e MAQROY J. DU BOIS. -Witnesses:
