JAMES DAVIDSON SLOAN, 0F GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
CHIMNEY AND VENTILATING-SHAF'I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application filed November 14, 1916. Serial No. 131,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DAVIDSON SLOAN, of 151 Queen street, in the county of the City of Glasgow, Scotland,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys and VentilatingShafts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chimneys and ventilating shafts and has for its object a better consumption of fuel with improved results of heat and power therefrom, as well as better ventilation before having recourse to forced draft. This is effected by causing a better natural induced draft, and can be applied to all merchant steamers or war vessels and railway locomotives.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an outer and inner chimney, the outer being in one while the inner is constructed of a suitable number of sections or what might be designated smaller chimneys or cones, so formed as to lie one above the other with a passage or space between each, and which may be riveted or otherwise suitably fixed to the outer chimney, a passage being at same time left between the outer and inner chimneys.
In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effeet, I have appended one sheet of drawings of which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a chimney stack in one of its simplest forms made in accordance with and constituting my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken on the line a, b, Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of a similar chimney stack illustrating a modification in the internal construction thereof, all hereafter more fully referred to and described.
Referring to the drawings, A is the outer casing formed of sheet metal with-induction or ventilating inlets B, C, D. The inner casing E at a certain elevation is built up of short tapered sections F, G, H; superimposed or lying one upon the other and maintained in position by hook brackets J formed Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Oommluloner 0! Washington, D. G.
upon the lower ends of the sections and designed to engage with the edges of upper portions of the sections or by other suitable means. The air enters the ventilating inlets B, C, D, in the direction indicated by the arrows and is induced to enter between the outer and inner chimneys A and E by the speed of the steamer or locomotive, as well as by any prevailing favorable wind, gaining the central interior of stack through the spaces between the sections or cones F, G, H indicated by arrows.
Referring to F i 4: in lieu of the short taper sections F, (if, H, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a sheet of metal I is coiled to form a helix commncing at the top of the chimney stack and terminating at a point immediately above the ventilating inlets B, C, D, and tapering downward as seen. By this arrangement, the spaces between the coils for the ingress of the air'are formed by suitable distance pieces or devices, and are continuous from top to bottom.
It will be seen from F ig.y2' that the ventilating inlets B, C, D, can conveniently be supplied with cowls B C D rendered adjustable so that each cowl is capable of being turned to suit the direction of the wind, which arrangement applies to port starboard and midship positions.
Claim.
In a chimney and ventilating shaft, a cylinder provided with openings, air trumpets connected to such openings, a shaft within such cylindrical casing, said shaft comprising a number of upwardly tapered sections, such sections being provided at their lower ends with brackets to engage the upper ends of the next underlying sections, whereby to support said first mentioned sections, the shaft provided with an annular space between the sections by virtue of their tapered constructions.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES DAVIDSON SLOAN.
