To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I", BURT W. Dnoe'ron, a c tizen of the United; States,. residingat Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool handles, especially to tool handles adapted to receive and hold files and; other tapered shank tools, one object of the invention being to provide an improved tool handle of this character Which embodies a socket member to receive the tool shank and also embodies means of improved construction to securely hold the socket member in the handle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tool handle constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the sleeve.
Fig. 4 is a detailed elevation of the coil.
The handle 1 may be made of wood or of any other suitable material and may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form and may be of any suitable size, according to the tool in connection with which the handle is to be used.
The handle is provided with a central longitudinal bore 2 which extends to its outer end and is also provided with a cylindrical counter-bore 3 which extends to the inner end of the handle. At its inner end the handle is provided with a reduced portion 4 and with a step-reduced portion 5, as shown. A socket member 6 is provided to receive and hold the shank of the tool. This socket member is cylindrical and is preferably in practice a plug of wood. The diameter of the socket member is less than the diameter of the counter-bore 3. The socket member is arranged in the counter-bore and is held by means of a screw 7 which screw extends through the bore 2. The head of the screw bears on a ferrule 8 which is arranged at the outer end of the handle and is rovided with a cylindrical portion 9 whic is arranged in a correspondingly shaped recess with Which the outer end of the handle is provided.
A tubular sleeve 10 which in practice may be made of tin, is fitted around the socket member and extends from end to end thereof. The inner end of the tubular sleeve is provided with longitudinal spaced kerfs 11 whereby tongues 12 are formed. The length of the tubular sleeve with its tongues exceeds that of the socket member so that initially the tongues project beyond the inner end of the handle. The sleeve is fitted and compressed in a coil member 13 which constitutes a coiled wire and extends from the inner end of the sleeve to the outer end thereof. The coil member may be made of wire of any suitable gage and of any suitable material and its coils may be soldered together. The tongues of the sleeve are bent radially to bear against the inner end of the handle and their outer portions are bent backwardly and caused to bear on the step portion 5 of the handle, as shown.
A ferrule 14: is fitted on the reduced inner end 4 of the handle and covers the inner end of the sleeve and coil members and also covers the reversely bent tongues of the sleeve member. The coils of the coil member frictionally grip in the wall of the counter-bore and said coil member compresses the sleeve member so that the latter firmly and securely holds the socket member in place in the handle. The socket member has a slot 15 which extends there-across to form walls for the engagement of the fiat side of the tool shank. The sleeve member has corresponding slots 16 through which the tool shank extends so that the narrow edges 01- the tool shank are directly engaged by the coil member and hence the tool shank is firmly held in place in the slot of the socket member and the tool is prevented from becoming casually loosened or detached from the handle as will be understood.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A tool handle having a counter-bore in one end, a socket member of less diameter than and arranged concentrically in the counter-bore and having a slot extending diametrically there-through for the reception of a tool shank, a sleeve member on the socket member and having corresponding slots in opposite sides, and a coil member around and detachable from the sleeve memher, and fitted in the counter-bore and engaging the Wall thereof, the convolutions of said coil member extending across the slots of the sleeve member and being arranged to directly engage the narrow edges of the tool shank.

A tool handle having a counter-bore in one end, a socket member of less diameter than and arranged concentrically in the counter-bore and having a slot extending Copies of this patent may be obtained for diametrically there-through, for the reception of a tool shank, a sleeve member on the socket member and having corresponding slots in opposite sides, and a coil member around and detachable from the sleeve member, and fitted in the counter-bore and engaging the Wall thereof, the convolutions of said coil member extending across the slots of the sleeve member and being arranged to directly engage the narrow edges of the tool shank, the said sleeve member having reversely turned tongues at the counter-bored end of the handle, and a ferrule fitted on said end of the handle and bearing against and holding said tongues.
