IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,209, dated August 6, 1872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Traveling-Bag Lock, invented by EDWARD L. GAYLORD, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved traveling-bag lock, simple in oonstruction and convenient in use, being so constructed that it may be unfastened with one hand while the other hand is carrying the bag, so that the bag may be conveniently opened in the street or other place where it cannot be conveniently set down; and it oonsists in the construction and combination of various parts of the lock, as hereinafter more fully described.

A is the inner plate, and B is the case of the lock, which are secured to each other and to the frame of thel bag by rivets which pass through the said case and plate and through the said frame, so that the lock can be attached to the frame after the bag has been finished. In the forward side of the case B is formed a hole to receive the catch C, which is attached to a block, D, that slides up and down in a recess formed in the inner side of the plate E, or in a strengthening-plate placed lupon thc inner side of said plate E. To the block D is attached a knob, F, the stem of which passes through a slot in the plate E. The catch C is beveled off upon the lower side of its forwardend, and has a shoulder formed upon its upper side, as shown in Fig. 4. By this construction, as the catch C is pushed y through the hole in the case B it compresses the spring G attached to the plate A, and which crosses the hole in the case B. As the shoulder of the catch C passes within the case B the said catch is raised by the elasticity of the spring G, so that the shoulder of the said catch may catch upon the side of the case B above the said hole, and thus fasten the bag. The bag is locked by thel bolt vlEI, which is pushed forward along the plate A so as to pass beneath the spring G, and which is held down upon the plate A by a guard, I, attached to the said plate A, and which, in case the case B is made light, may be extended along the forward side of the said case B to strengthen it, said extended part of the guard having a hole formed in it corresponding in size and position with, the hole through the said case B. The bolt H is slid forward and back by a ke'y, J, which is passed in through a key-hole in the upper side of the case B, and the guard of which enters a notch in the edge of the bolt H. The bolt H is held in position, both when pushed forward and drawn back, by a stop, K, attached to the plate A, and which enters notches in the edge of the said bolt, said notches being made with inclined sides, so that the bolt may be readily moved by the key J. The bolt H is held against the stop K and against the key J by the spring L attached to the plate A, and which presses against the opposite edge of the bolt H, as shown in Fig. 1.

By this construction the bag can be unfastened when the bolt H has been drawn back by pressing down upon the `knob Fand at the same time pulling outward, so that the bag can be conveniently unfastened and opened with one hand while being carried by the handle with the other hand. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The catch C attached to a sliding block, D, and provided with a knob, F, in combination with the recessed plate E and with the case B and spring G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The arrangement of the bolt H, guard I, stop K, and spring L, in connection with the spring G and hole in the case B tp look the catch C in the said case B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
