The invention consists in certain novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed, these features including a locking vdevice for the back-member of the type which includes a notched plate engageable by a bolt un der control of the occupant, the improved construction comprising a lever pivotally mounted outside a frame member in a vertical direction with a spring bolt connected to said lever, and the notched plate secured to the side of the back-member between the latter and the frame and adapted to be engaged by the spring bolt.

A. latch is provided adapted to engage the lever for rendering the spring bolt inoperative at will.

The back member is pivoted in the frame by" means of a cross-rod, which is located at the base of the back-member and inclosed by said member for substantially its entire length, the protruding ends of said rod being pivoted in fixed relationship to the frame in bearing plates detachably connected to the inside of said frame, and held in said bearing plates by cotter pins.

The protruding ends of said rod each rest in a slot in the upper end of a bearing-plate b? secured to the inside face of each of the uprights a .as by screws 6 and the rod is secured against accidentalremoval from said slots by means of cotter pins 6 The said protruding ends of the rod between the backmember and the bearing-plates are encircled by thick washers 0 secured to the backmember as by screws b and which serve to prevent the rod from working loose on the back-1nember and maintain it in position between the bearing-plates.

The lockingdevice for securing the backiember in desired position comprises a plate- 1 secured outside one of the rear-uprights a and a second plate 6Z1 secured to the inside thereof, each as by screws (Z These plates form bearings and guides for a spindle (Z having at its enda catch (Z under the action of a spring d and pivoted outside the chair to one end of a lever (Z fulcrumed at (Z in lugs (Z formed on the plate (Z, the opposite end of said lever being enlarged as at (Z for ready manipulation by the hand of the occupant.
