i T all whom it may concern A Be it known that I, WESLEY G. VVINANS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hinged Seats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for hinged seats.

The object of this inventionl` is to provide an attachment which can be readily applied to chairs having hinged seats such as opera chairs, baseball chairs and the like, and which will automatically raise the seat to a vertical position when the seat is not occupied.

A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the kind referred to which can be readily adjusted according to the amount of force which must be eX- erted to lift the seat.

My invention, therefore, consists in the features of construction and combination of parts described in the specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accoinpanying drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chair with my attachment mounted thereon, the seat of the chair being held in a vertical position. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3#3, Fig. 2.

Again referring to the drawings 2 represents the side members or standards of an opera chair or the like of the usual construction, the said standards being secured to the floor 3 by suitable screws 4. Between the standards is rigidly mounted the back of the seat 5 in the usual manner. The seat proper is pivotally mounted or hinged between the standards 2 as follows: On the under side of the seat 6 at each side thereof is secured a hinge member 7 having at the rear end thereof an opening 8 for the hinge pin or bolt 10. This bolt 10 is passed through an opening 9 in the standard and through the opening 8 in the hinge member 7 and then through a bracket member 12 which is designed to support the inner end of said bolt and on the end of the said bolt 10 is arranged a nut 11, all of which is of the customary construction and forms no part of my invention.

My attachment is usually applied at only one side of the seat and in order to mount my attachment at the side where the attachment is to be mounted the hinge bolt 10 is made considerably longer than the hinge bolt at the opposite side, and before the nut 11 is screwed onto the end of the said bolt a plate 13, having an opening through which the end of the bolt may pass, is slipped over the end of the said bolt. The sadplate 13 is provided with a foot piece 13 which extends outwardly from said plate 13 at a right angle. In the Asaid foot piece 13 is formed a slot 111 which extends longitudi nally of said foot piece and extending into said slot are a series of stop-forming projections 15. On the face of the plate 13, adjacent to the bracket 12 is arranged a lug 17 which is adapted to engage with said bracket 12. On the end of the bolt 10, on the inside of said plate 13, is arranged a coilspring 18, one end of the coil being arranged to eX- tend upwardly and engage the under side of the seat 6 and the other end of the coil being arranged to extend down into the slot 14.- and engage one of the projections 15, as desired. After the spring 1S has been placed in position the nut 11 is screwed into place and the attachment is complete.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an attachment that can be applied' to most all hinged seats, the only change necessary being the substitution of a longer hinge bolt for the one ordinarily used. After the attachment has been mounted on the hinge bolt the tension of the spring can be readily adjusted to correspond to the weight of the seat or the force necessary to move the same and this adjustment is secured by causing the lower end of the coil spring to engage one or another of the projections 15 on the foot piece. If it is desired to increase the tension of the spring the end of the coil is brought forward and caused to engage a projection at the front end of the foot piece 13', while if it is desired to lessen the tension the end of the coil is moved back and caused to engage a projection at the rear end of the foot piece.

What I claim is,-

1. The combination of a seat, a standard, a hinge bolt pivotally supporting said seat on said standard, a plate arranged on said bolt and having a foot piece arranged at a right angle thereto, said foot piece having a slot and a series of projections extending into said slot and a coil spring arranged on said bolt, one end of said coil spring being adapted to engage the under side of said seat and the other end of said coil spring being adapted to engage with one of the said projections on said foot piece.

2. The combination of a seat, a standard, a hinge bolt pivotally supporting said seat on said standard, a plate arranged on said bolt, said plate being provided With a lug on its outer face adapted to engage with a stationary portion of said standard and also having a foot piece extending in the opposite direction from said lug and arl/VE SLEY G.
