Description

H. B. BARNES. Slate'd-Bobk.
Patented Aug 6,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
HENRY BURR BARNES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRQVEMENT IN SLATED BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Lot-tors Patent No. 130,179, dated August 6, 18772.
SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. BARNES, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Slated Book; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in providing arithmetics or other books, more especially schoolbooks, with a slate or slated surface, or a surface covered with a silicate of soda, and a water-prooffly-leafinterposed between said surface and the bodyof the book so as to prevent the water that may be used for erasing the writing on the slate from injuring the leaves and binding of the book.
The drawing is a perspective view of the open book, showing the fly-leaf, in front and behind slated surface, and the slated surface.
In the drawing, A represents the book; B, the slated surface; and O, the water-proof flyleaf.
I have found that the silicatebook slated surface now in extensive-use is well adapted to the purposes of my invention 5 but any other surface suitable for frequent writings and erasure by moisture may be used for this purpose.
The fly-leaf I prefer to be made of paper rendered water-proof by any well-known process, though oiled silk or other suitable material may be used.
In all school-books having a slated surface children will use more water than is necessary to wipe out the writing or drawing, and unless a protecting water-proof fly-loaf is used the Water will injure the book.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of an arithmetic or other book with a slate or slated surface, or its equivalent, and a water-proof fly-leaf and leaf between slate and cover to protect the j0int and cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above-described new and improved slated. book I have hereunto signed my name.
Vitnesses: HENRY BURR BARNES.
E. MILLER, F. O. BOWEN.
