Specification of Letters Patent.
FORM FOR CONCRETE JOISTS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEWITT L. WELLS, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Concrete J oists; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to molds for forming T-beanis or joists of concrete and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient mold of this character which may readily be used in carrying out the method of concrete construction set forth in Letters Patent No. 1,220,915, granted March 27, 1917, the mold likewise being capable of use in known methods of forming concrete beams and joists in aim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the molds or forms in position ready to receive the concrete. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing some of the mold sections partly removed. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective showing two mold boards and complementary spacing members.
As shown in the drawings, a series of spaced apart joist boards or base plates 1 is arranged upon falsework of the type commonly used in concrete floor construction. The joist boards or plates support the side boards of the molds for the beams, and where the ceiling is to be formed under the joists these boards form a support for the metal lath or other undercovering, the lath lying between the base plates and the lower edge of the side boards.
The mold members for each T-beam include complementary side-boards or planks 5 to which are secured sheet metal members 6 which form the cores. Each core, which forms one side of the stem and a portion of the T of the joist, is shaped by bending the sheet 6 longitudinally to form an approximately vertically disposed wall 7 and then at an angle to such wall to form an approximately horizontally disposed portion 8, a flange 9 being then bent along the edge of the portion 8 to form a means for securing this edge of the core to the side-boards, tacks or other means being used to securely fasten the two together. I have shown the lower edge of the core bent as at 10 to engage the lower edge of the side-board 5 to which it may likewise be secured by any preferred form of fastening element.
On the reverse side of each board 5 and at points near each end and at intermediate points, if necessary, I provide a short strip of wood which forms a batten 12, these battens having apertures 13 designed to register with holes 14 in spacing members 15. As shown these members are out from planking, with each end beveled as at 16, the shorter longitudinal edge being at the top. The adj acent sideboards of pairs of mold members are detachably secured to these spacing mem bers by pins 17. Members 15 in addition to appropriately spacing the side-boards for the molds and securing the side boards in upright position, also, by reason of the beveled ends, insure the proper slanting disposition of the side-boards 5 with their core members (5. The number of spacing memhere which may be required between the sideboards of pairs of mold members will depend upon the length of the side-boards and the span between supporting beams.
At the ends of the joists and adjacent the beam 1 have shown a closing end 18 of wood which prevents the concrete from flowing into the space between the side forms. The forms are readily assembled by securing the side boards of opposite joists to the spacing members 15. When so assembled the parts are of box-like form and may be quickly set in place, the side boards resting upon the joist boards supported by the usual falsework. By reason of the slant of the ends 01. the spacing members the side boards will be disposed on a slant with the result that the cores 6 will be arranged so that the wall 7 will be perpendicular and the portion 8 in proper position to form the under side of the T. That part of the plank 5 above the core portion 8 forms the undercut side of the T. With the forms in position and whatever reinforcing bars are required placed within the joist space concrete is poured and after it has sufiiciently set the forms are removed by disconnecting the spacing members there from knocking the latter endwise and then lifting them, and then by first a sidewise and then an upward movement withdrawing the side boards. This may be done before the joists are strong enough to support their own Weight, the supporting falsework not being interfered with.
I claim as my invention:
1. Means for forming concrete T-beams including complementary side members, each of said side members having an inclined surface, and cores secured to the inclined surface of said side members and having a vertically disposed wall and a horizontal portion.
2. Means for forming concrete T-beams including complementary side members arranged on a slant, cores secured to said side members and having a vertically disposed wall and a horizontal portion, and means for maintaining said side members in slanting disposition.
3. Means for forming spaced apart concrete beams including pairs of side members arranged on a slant, cores secured to said side members and having a vertically disposed Wall and a horizontal portion, spacing elements arranged between opposite side members of two sets oi forms, and means for coupling said side members to said spacing elements to maintain the former in slanting disposition.
4:. Means for forming spaced apart concrete beams including pairs of side mem-- bers arranged on a slant, cores secured to said side members and having a vertically disposed wall and a horizontal portion, spacing elements arranged between opposite side members of two sets of forms, each of said elements having; its ends beveled, and means for coupling said side members and said spacin elements.
5. hfeans for forming, spaced apart concrete beams including pairs'of side members arranged on a slant, cores secured to said side members, each of said cores being shaped from a single piece of metal bent to form a vertically disposed wall and a horizontal portion, spacing elements arranged between opposite side members of two sets of forms and having its ends beveled to support said side members in a slanting position, and means for maintaining said side members and spacing elements set up.
6. Means for forming spaced apart con crete beams including pairs of side members arranged on a slant, apertured battens secured to said side members on one face thereof, cores secured to the opposite face of said side members, each of said cores being shaped from a single piece of metal bent to form a vertically disposed Wall and a horizontal portion, spacing elements arranged between'opposite side members of two sets of forms and having their ends beveled to supportsaid side members in a slanting position, said elements having apertures de signed to aline with those of said side members and locking pins fitting in the apertures of said battens and spacing elements for maintaining the latter and said side members set up.
