POST DRIVING HEAD. APPLICATION FILED MAYI3I ms.

I Copies of this patent may be obtained for JOHN HENRY DOWNS, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
POST-DRIVING HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 31919.
Application filed May 13, 1918. Serial No. 234,248.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. DowNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Driving Heads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others" skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet an eflicient and durable head for driving metal posts having angular upper ends, and with this object in view, the invention resides in the construction of the head herein shown, described and claimed:
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the head applied to a post;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section;
Fig. 3 is an edge view;
Fig. 4 is an upper end view; and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the plane of line 5-5 of Fi 2.
The head, briefy described, consists of a metal body having a channel to receive the angular upper end of the post, means for securing said body in place, and a shoulder on said body to rest on the lateral end of the post, whereby when the head is driven by the use of a sledge or the like, the post will be driven into the ground.
Specifically described, the head is constructed as follows: A substantially flat. metal body 1 is provided on its sides with parallel flanges 2 forming therewith a channel 3 to receive the upper end of the post P, and a pin 4 is insertible through openings 5 in said flanges to retain the post in the channel, so that a shoulder 6 on the edge of the body 1 forming the channel bottom, overlies the lateral upper end E of the post. The flanges 2 are preferably formed by securing parallel plates to opposite sides of the body 1 with substantially half their width projecting from the shouldered edge thereof, said body preferably extending above said plates and having shoulders 7 resting thereon to relieve the rivets or the like 8 of strain. The pin 4 is by preference tapered to wedge the post in the channel 3.
By constructing the head as shown and described, it may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and will be efiicient and durable, being easily attachable and detachable. The device is intended principally for driving fence posts but may be used for other purposes. Also, numerous minor changes may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A post driving head comprising a block adapted for contact with one side of the post, the upper end of said block being increased in size and having a lateral shoulder to rest upon the post, said block having a pair of parallel vertical flanges extending beyond said shoulder to receive the post therebetween, and means associated with said flanges for fixedly securing the entire head upon the post.
2. A post driving head comprising a vertically elongated flat sided, metal block increased in thickness at its upper end to provide a pair of downwardly facing shoulders extending transversely across the opposed fiat sides of said block, said block being also increased in width at its upper end to form a downwardly facing, driving shoulder adapted to rest on the post, a pair of fiat plates secured to said fiat sides of said block and resting against said pair of shoulders, said plates projecting beyond said block to receive the post therebetween, the projecting parts of said plates having alined openings, and a pin receivable .in said openings to retain the head on the post.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set in hand.
y JOHN HENRY DOWNS.
