BEN E. AVERY AND GEORGE H. FIFE, OF CARRIERS MILLS, ILLINOIS.
CEMENT FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 31, 1909.
Patented Mar. 11, 1913.
Serial No, 487,028.
To (ZZZ whom it may 007L0677L Be it known that we, BEN E. Avnnr and GEORGE H. Finn, citizens of the United States, residing at Carriers Mills, in the county of Saline, State of Illinois, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement Fence-Posts; and we do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in devices for clamping the strands of a wire fence to a concrete fence post and the principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved clamping device having metallic clamping members, one of said members being formed with locking ears or projections and said member being so constructed that it can be stamped out of sheet metal without any waste of material.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a concrete post showing the clamping device applied in position thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the post. Fig. 3 is a collective view showing the parts of one of the clamping devices in perspective. Fig. is a plan view showing a blank strip of material from which the outer locking or clamping member is formed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical application of the invention 5 denotes the cement or concrete post which has its lower end embedded in the ground. A series of bolts 6, which are formed with T-shaped heads 7 and threaded terminals 8 have their T-shaped heads em bedded in the concrete 5 with the threaded ends 8 projecting horizontally from the post. A square-shaped plate 10 is mounted on the shank of each bolt and partly disposed in a recess formed in the cement post. Against the plate 10 the wire strands 1-1 are positioned and against said wire strands the outer clamping plate 9 is positioned. The outer clamping plate 9 is formed out of sheet metal and is formed with square-shaped ears or projections 12 which are located at diagonally opposite corners thereof and which are adapted to engage wit-h the upper and lower edges of the square-shaped plate 10 whereby the clamping plate 9 is held against rotation on the plate 10. Against each clamping plate 9 a nut 13 is threaded on the threaded end S of the bolt so that the wire strand 14 is firmly clamped between the two plates.
The outer clamping plate 9 is provided with ears located at diagonally opposite points thereon so that said plate can be manufactured at a low cost and with no waste of material. By referring to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be seen that a strip of material wide enough for one or more plates 9 can be divided up into said plates in a very economical way. By forming the ears or projection 12 so that they are equal in width to one-half the width of the plate nearly one-fourth of the material that would be required to form said plates were the ears of equal width to the plates, can be saved, without in any way increasing the difficulty of cutting or forming said plates.
lVhat is claimed is The combination in a fence post structure of a concrete fence post, a series of threaded bolts projecting therefrom, a wire clamping device upon each bolt, each clamping device consisting of an inner and outer member and a clamping nut, the inner member being square-shaped and being partly embedded in the fence post and mounted on one of the bolts, the outer member consisting of a square-shaped plate having square-shaped projecting ears located at diagonally opposite corners and disposed at right angles to one face of the plate and adapted to contact with the upper and lower edges of the inner plate and at points upon each side of the axis of the bolt, said ears being equal in width to one-half the width of the said plate and being adapted to clamp a fence wire, the nut being threaded on the threaded end of the bolt and holding the outer plate firmly toward the inner plate, said outer plate be ing stamped out of sheet metal.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
