GUT-OFF AND DRAIN VALVE.

Application filed May 26, 1916. Serial No. 99,947.
Iofi and drain valve, particularly for use in the water-supply system of buildings, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of valve for the purpose mentioned, and a valve wherein the drain-port ,will be cut-oft before the supply-port is opened.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the im-- proved valve in a single view in longitudinal cr0ss-section.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1, designates the body-member of the valve and 2, the stem-member thereof. The bodymember is provided with a threaded opening 3, for connection with a water supplypipe, and another threaded opening 4, with which the'house-pipe c0nnects,it being un derstood that the water sup-ply will enter the valve at the opening 3, and will pass out through opening or connection 4, to the house or building. Between the two connections 3 and 4, the body-member has a partition 5, which latter has a supply port 6, around which an annular bead 7, is formed to serve as a valve-seat.
By preference I provide an annular wall 8, about the bead or seat 7 which wall extends upwardly from the port 6, for a purpose presently to be explained.
Between the inlet 3 and the outlet 4, the body-member also has a circular passage 9, and on the exterior, and about said passage 9, I provide the body-member with exterior screw-threads 10. It will thus be seen that the inlet 3, and outlet 4, are disposed at a right angle to the circular passage 9, and it will also be seen that the inner end of the passage communicates with a chamber 11, and that outlet 4, also communicates with said chamber.
The stem-member 2, of the valve has a fiat base 12, provided with a port 13, and
also has an annular exterior flange 14, for the engagement of a coupling ring 15. The port 13, of the stem-member is brought into register with the circular passage 9, of the body-member and a sealing washer 16, is
interposed between the two members so that the coupling ring 15, may be engaged with the screw-threads 10, to draw the two members and the sealing washer together.
The port 13, communicates with a chamber 17, in the stem-member, and a drain nozzle 18, extends through the side of the stemmember Wall so as to provide a drain passage 19, from said chamber 17.
Beyond the chamber 17, the stem-member has a cylindric extension 20, with a square screw-thread 21, on its interior and an exterior circumferential thread 22, around its outer end. The outer end of this extension is concave and a cap 23 is secured onto said thread 22, to form a stufiing box for inclosing a packing 24.
A stem 25, extends through the cap 23, packing material 24, and through a perform tion in the end of the cylindric extension, 20, and said stem also projects through the extension, across the chamber 17, through port 13 and passage 9, and into chamber 11.
The stem 25, carries a head 26, provided with circumferential threads 27, which engage the threads 21, in the cylindric extension. Between the ports 13 and 6, said stem also has a circular head 28, whose diameter is such as to snugly fit the circular passage 9, and between said head 28, and the port 6, said stem is provided with a valve 29, whose diameter is such as to enable it to snugly lit the annular wall 8, around the port 6.
A sealing washer 30, is preferably provided on the valve 29, whereby to seat on the annular -bead 7, and make a tight seal around the port 6, when the valve is in the cut-01f position. The outer end of the stem 25, also has a hand wheel or cross bar 31, for the obvious purpose of enabling the stem to be readily revolved by hand.
In the drawing, the valve is shown with the stem 25, and valve 29, in position to seat the sealing washer 30, on the seat 7, and thereby effect a closure of the port 6, to cut oif the supply to the building or house systerm. It will be noted that when the parts are in the cut-off position, the building orhouse pipes will be thrown into communication with the passage 9, port 13, chamber 17 and drain-passage 19, because the circular head 28, has been moved inwardly from passage 9, into chamber 11,thereby allowing the water in the house pipes to flow back into chamber 11, and from the latter through passage 9, and port 13 and chamher 17, into the drain pipe 18. Thus it will be seen that when port 6, is closed the house pipe or system communicates with the drain passage 19, so that water in said system may drain ofi". a
When it is desired to open the port 6, and allow the water from the main to pass to the house system it is desirable to first cut off communication between the house system and drain before admitting water through port 6, into chamber 11, otherwise such water would pass through port 6, to chamber 11 and fiow from the latter through passage 9, and discharge through the drain passage.
To effect this operation of first closing passage 9, it will be noted that the exterior wall of valve 29, has a close fit with the annular wall 8, around the port 6, and therefore water cannot pass from port 6, to chamber 11, until said valve withdraws from said circular wall. It will also be noted that when the valve 29, is seated around port 6, the circular head 28, is so located with respect to the circular passage 9, as to provide a passage for water from the chamber 11, to passage 9, consequently when the stem 25, is revolved to effect an outward movement of the stem to uncover port 6, the circular head 28, will move into the passage 9, far enough to close the latter from chamber 11, before the valve 29, withdraws from the circular wall 8, around port 6, consequently passage 9, will be cut ofi? by head 28, before valve 29, uncovers port 6, and water from the mains cannot pass directly from the main, through chamber 11, to the passage 9, and escape through the drain. connections said partition being provided with a supply-port and having an annular chamber around the port said body-member further having a circular passage 9, directly over the supply-port; a hollow member detachably secured to the body-member and communicating-with said passage and provided with a drain passage lead ng therefrom a stem hav n at its nner end an integral head and an integral reduced circular a plug valve which latter has a diameter to snugly close against the wall of the said annular chambersaid integral head being of a size to engage the wall of the said passage 9, and the distance between theupper side of said head and the inner end of the passage 9, when the valve is closed being less than the depth of the annular chamber around the supply port.
