To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. FECKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed steads, and
more particularly to those designed for use bysick people.
The object of the invention is to provide a bed stead having a head rest whereby the occupant may be supported at any desired angle.
Another object is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character which may be removed if desired or collapsed and folded out of the way when not in use, being allowed to remain connected with the bed stead.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what isclaimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, the bed stead embodying this invention is shown made of metal and comprises a head member 1, foot member 2, connected by side rails 3. A rod 4 is rotatably mounted in the posts 7 of the head member 1, said posts being hollow and the ends of said rod extending into them. Each end of this rod is provided with a pinion 6, and the portion of the rod outside the post 7 is made angular as shown at 5 for the interlocking engagement of catch members 12 pivotally mounted on the posts 7 above the rod 4 as is shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 6.
The posts 7 at their lower ends are slotted longitudinally on their inner faces as shown at 8 and arranged within said posts are rack bars 9 which are designed to reciprocate in the posts and the teeth of which mesh with the pinions 6 carried by the rod 4.
The lower ends of the rack bars 9 are provided with open longitudinally extending slots 10 with a pin or rod 11 extending transversely across this slotted end and which is designed for connection with the lower ends of links 17 of the head rest 20 presently to be described.
Secured to the side rails 3 at points spaced some distance from the head boards or member 1, are keepers 13 shown slotted longitudinally at 15 and having apertured lugs 14 for fastening them to the side rails. These keepers are disposed longitudinally on said slide rails and the slots 15 thereof are designed to receive the lower free ends 16 of side bars 21 of the head rest 20 as is shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The head rest 20 as shown is made rectangular in form and pivotally connected with the upper corners thereof are the links or bars 17, the lower ends of which are curved outwardly and slotted longitudinally at their terminals as shown at 19, these slot being open to provide for their engagement with the pins or cross rods 11 carried by the rack bars 9. By so curving and slotting the ends 18 of the links 17 they may have a hooklike engagement with the pins 11 to provide for their ready connection and disconnection when desired.
The side bars 21 of the head rest are connected near their lower ends by a cross bar 22 below which the bars 21 are given a twist as shown at 23 so that the ends 16 thereof will be disposed edgewise for insertion through the slots 15 in the keepers 13, said side bars being preferably made of strap iron as shown.
In the use of this head rest, when it is desired to elevate it, the hooks 12 are first disengaged from the rod l and then the cross bar at the upper end of the head rest is grasped and the rest swung upward, the ends 16 which are inserted in the keepers operating as pivots and the ends 18 of the links 17 being engaged with the rack bars 9 will cause said rack bars to moveupwardly and consequently turn the pinions 6 and the rod 4 on which they are mounted. thenthe rest has been positioned at the desired angle, it is held in this position by engaging the catches 12 with the angular portions 5 of the rod 4, which holds this rod against turning and consequently prevents the downward or upward movement of the rack bars.
If it is not desired to use this head rest, the slotted ends 19 of the links 17 may be disengaged from the pins 11 and said links folded inwardly into substantially parallel position with the side bars '21. The head rest may then be lowered so that the side bars 21 thereof will rest on and lie parallel with the side rails 3 of the bed stead. Vhen so positioned, obviously, the head rest will be out of the way and will vafiord no inconvenience to the user of the bed.
It is of course understood that the rest may be entirely removed by disengaging {the appearance by the application of this head rest and when the head rest is removed the only evidence of its having been on :the bed stead will be of the slots in the posts 17 and the keepers 13 on the side rails.
From the foregoing description, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readilyapparent to those skilled 'in the art to which the invention a-ppertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is
1.. The combination with a bed stead having a head member equipped with hollow legs longitudinally slotted on their inner faces, rack bars mounted to slide in said legs and having transversely arranged pins carried thereby, a head rest mounted for pivotal movement on said bed stead at a point spaced from said head member, and links connecting-said head rest with said rack bars,

3. The combination with ,a bed steadhaving ahead member provided with hollow legs slotted longitudinallyaon their inner faces, rack bars mounted to reciprocate lollgitudinally in said legs, a rod rota-tablein said head member with its ends extending into the legs thereof and equipped with pinions meshing with said rackbars, said rod being provided outside said legs with angular portions, batches carried by said head member tor engaging the angular. portions of the rodwhereby it is locked {against rotary movemenha head rest pivotally connected with said bed steadat, points spaced from the head member thereof, andv links vcarried by saidhead rest and detachablyen gaged with {saidraok bars, said links extending through the slots i1 said legs.
