To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it'iniownv that I, DMYTRO BALYK, a subject' of the 'Em eror of Austria, and a resident of Medicine Hat, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in combined sofas and couches and has as its princi al object the provision 0f means where y a single article of furniture of the class mentioned may be arranged to act either as a sofa or a lounge or metamorphosed into a bed or couch, the article being equally well adapted for either purpose.

A still further object is to provide such article of furniture of neat and attractive appearance, comfortable in use in either of its positions and which occupies but a minimum amount of space.

These and other allied objects, such as simplicity and economy7 of construction, strength and durability, are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the article, parts being broken away in order to disclose the interior.

The article consists essentially of a ri id rectangular structure having front and slde walls respectively 10 and 11, joined by ends 12 having at their intersectin corners legs 14 extended downwardly an ada ted to rest upon the ioor or other level sur ace.

Near the end elements 12 and at the lower side of the frame are rigidly secured crossbars 15 by means of the brackets 16, immediately above which are formed undercut recesses 18 in the front and rear frame element 10 and 11, and adapted to slide in these undercut recesses are brackets 20, the same bein portion o the frame work which may be padded and stuffed to give a desired resiliency and having a cover 23 of leather or other preferred material with which the article is upholstered.

Attached rigidly near the center of the seat supports 22 is a bracket 24 with which the inner end of the screw en ages, the screw bein operative in a threade sleeve or bushing 2v set rigidly in the cross bar 15, the screw being provided with an operating hand wheel 27.

Thus it will be evident that by manipulating the screw, the seat of the sofa may be raise or lowered. When it is in a normal position its upper surface is sli htly above the upper edge of the frame but 1t is capable of being raised higher in order to suit the convenience of the person sitting thereon, or the seat may be lowered between the frame elements leaving a clear open space.

In, order to obtain access to the hand wheel 27 so as to operate the screw in raising or lowering the seat, doors 29 are provided in the end elements 12; above these end elements are hingedly attached the elements 30 which act as arm rests when the article is used as a sofa or which may be extended, either horizontally or angularly, when the article is used as a bed or couch.

Rising from the rear frame element 11 is a back 32 permanently and rigidly secured to the frame and containing a recess 33 receptive of the mattress 34 when folded therein, the mattress being hinged at its lower edge 35 and held by means of spring clips 36 at the upper edge.

When used as a sofa, the exterior or bottom of the mattress 37 is covered with the same kind of fabric which is disposed over the seat and arms 30 in the manner in which such articles of furniture are usually finished.

In order to hold the arms in a vertical position, a pair of straps 40 are engaged at their outer ends with the arms 30, passed through openings 41 in the back 32 and engaged by bue les 44 secured to brackets 45 at the rear and in such manner as to be readily operated from the back of the article.

Obviously when the arms 30 are held in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, the

attached to the seat 22 or cover mattress is held by the inner ends of the arms within the recesses 33 in addition to the clips 36.

When it is desired to use the article as a couch, the straps are loosened to such an extent as may be desired allowing either or both arms to assume a horizotnal or angular position, one independent of the other, so that one arm may be used as a pillowr and the other as a foot rest if desired.

When the arms are lowered, the sprin catch 36 is released and the mattress turne down resting upon the upper edge of the frame, the seat 23 at that time having been lowered so as not to conflict.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with an o en rectangular frame and a rigid recessed back extending vertically thereabove, of adjustable arm rests and a seat disposed over the opening in said frame, a pair of transverse bars aiiixed in said frame below said seat set screws enga ed with said bars for positively raising and owering said seat, doors in said frame for allowing a ready access to said screws, guide ways formed 1n said frame in the front and rear elements thereof, brackets rigidly secured to said seat operable in said guideways, a mattress hinged at its lower edge to the frame adagted to be held in a vertical position or to e lowered over said seat, sprlng clips for normally holding said mattress vertically against said back, and means for adjusting said arm rests, said arm rests contacting in vertical position with the front side of said mattress near its end edges and when inclined permitting a lowering of the mattress, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
