To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON WEISS, a citizen of United States, and resident of Allenton, in the county of Washington and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk- Can Closures, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a closure for milkV cans and the like which will form a tight sealing connection between the cover and the can neck that will neither permit of the milk bein spilled therefrom nor allow dust to enter t e can.
' Cans of milk are commonly left standing on loading platforms at the roadside and at railway stations, and on windy, dusty days the dust is blownthrough the loose fitting joint between the flanged cap and the canl neck, thus contaminating the contents. The present invention provides an air tight sealing closure for the milk can which will be free from this objection.
W ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the milk can closure as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a milk can closure constructed in accordance with this invention;

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the neck of the can showing the cam flange thereof; and,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the sealing connection.
In these drawings 10 indicates the neck portion of a milk can which is provided with a heavy reinforcing metal band 11 around its edge, said band having its upper edge rounded to form a part of the sealing closure as will be later described. The cover member 12 has a horizontal shoulder portion 13 around its edge and a downwardly extending vertical annular flange 14 neatly fitting around the ring 11. In the right angular rabbet formedl between the horizontal portion 18 and the surrounding flange 14 on the inside of the cover is seated a rubber Specication of Letters Patent.

strip 15 which is approximately square in cross section and is of suiiicient length to lit entirely around the inside of the cover where it is held in place by a metal ring 16 of suiiicient diameter to crowd the rubber strip between it and the flange 14.
At diametrically opposite points the meta-l ring 1l of the can neck has angle strips 17 secured thereto in an inclined position, while the flange 14: of the cover at corresponding points has hook-shaped lugs 18 secured to it, the inturned hook ends of the lugs 18 serving to engage the outturned inclined flanges of the angle Strips 17 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inclination given to the angle strips 17 is in the same rotary direction so that when the cover is placed on the can neck and is given a turn both of the hooks 18 engage the flanges 17 and are drawn downwardly thereby, the inclined flanges acting as cams to embed the rounded upper edge of' the ring 11 into the ilubber gasket 15 in the manner Shown in The double cam action in tightening the sealing connection between the can neck and its cover assures an air tight iit entirely around the cover that will not permit of dust or water entering the can and will therefore serve to protect the contents of the can from contamination. At the same time the rubber gasket is so arranged that it may be readily removed for cleaning, it being only necessary to withdraw the ring 16 from within the gasket, thus relieving the pressure on the gasket and permitting it to be withdrawn. When the parts have been washed the may be quickly tted together for use. The ring 16 is preferably made of spring metal which will permit it to readily resume its normal shape after bein bent, thus permitting it to. be more-readily removed by merely bending it from its truly circular shape and also permitting it to spring back into clampin engagement with the rub-ber strip when t e parts are reas- Sembled.
. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
