Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Artificial-Tooth Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
It is one object of the present invention to provide novel means for holding an artificial denture in place. Another object of the invention is to provide novel ,means whereby a facing may be held on a structure which is to be assembled with the root of a natural tooth.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, change in the precise embodiment of the invention shown ,can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows inside elevation, one form of the invention, assembled with a portion of a tooth, the latter being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, parts being shown in elevation, and the root of the tooth being omitted; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a composite perspective view, wherein the parts of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are depicted in spaced relation; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing slight modification in the invention.
In carrying out the invention as disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5, there is provided a hollow pin 1 made of malleable metal, the pin being slit longitudinally as shown at 1 and being grooved or milled onits edges as shown at 2 and including a flat wing 3 having an openin 4. The numeral 5 marks a disk of mallea le metal having an opening 20. At 6 there appears a backing plate of malleable metal provided at its ends with laterally inclined flanges 7 and 8, the backing plate having an opening 9.
A T-shaped .-.anchor 10 is provided, the
same being made of malleable metal and including a head 11 having an opening 12, and a shank 14, the shank being bifurcated to form bendable prongs 15. In the ends of the head 11, anchoring notches 16 are formed. The numeral 17 marks a facing which may be made of porcelain, the facing having a longitudinal under cut recess 18.
In practical operation, a drill hole 21 is fashioned in the root of a tooth 22. The pin 1 is inserted through the opening 20 in the disk 5, and is mounted in 'the drill hole 21. A slender instrument is inserted within the pin 1 and the same is burnished to conform closely to the drill hole 21, the disk 5 bcing burnished down on the end of the root 22. The prongs 15 of the anchor 10 pass through the opening 9 in the backing plate 6 and through the opening 4 in the wing 3 of the pin 1, the prongs being clenched down on the wing 3, to hold the parts 6 and 3 together. The head 11 of the anchor 10 is received in the under cut recess 18 of the facing 17, the flange 7 of the backing plate 6 engaging the base of the facing 17, and the flange 8 engaging the exposed end of the facing to form a biting tip, all of the parts being, of course, properly shaped. The head 11 is held in the recess 18 of the facing 17, by cement indicated at 23, the cement finding an anchorage in the opening 12 and in the notches 16. The structure, having been assembled, is invested, and a mass of solder indicated at 19 is connected with the backing plate 6, the wing 3 and the disk 5, the structure being burnished and finished up. The pin 1 now may be inserted into the drill hole 21 of the root and be held there by cement indicated at 24:, the ocment engaging the groovedor milled part 2 of the pin 1.
In Fig. 6, a slight modification of the invention is shown.
In Fig. 6, the hollow pin is of the sort hereinbefore described, and is denoted by the numeral 25, the grooves or milling being shown at 26. The pin includes a head 27 having an opening 28, there being a flange or rib 29 at the point of juncture between the head 27 and the pin 25. The numeral 30 denotes an artificial tooth having an under cut recess 31 and provided with a counterbore 32 at the base of the recess. The head 27 of the pin is received in the recess 31 and is held therein by cement shown at 50, the cement finding an anchorage in the clearly understood from what has been said hereinbefore concerning that form of the invention which is disclosed in the preceding figures. In general, the speclfic procedure outlined may be departed from without jeopardizing the utility of the invention.
Reverting to that form of the invention which is shownin Fig. 1, it will be understood that if the facing 17 should become broken, a new facing can be fitted inplace without removing the remaining parts of the device from the root of the tooth. The hollow pin 1,-or the pin 25, is so constructed to fit the bore or drill hole. Further, if it becomes necessary to remove the pin 1, a tool may be run up inside of the pin for this purpose. The facing 17 is beveled as shown at 34 to receive the flanges 7 and 8 of the backing plate 6 and since the flanges 7 and 8 diverge as shown in the drawings, the facing 17 may be replaced readily when required'.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. As an article of manufacture, a hollow longitudinally split den-turcpin made of malleable metal, the pin being provided ad- Gopies ofthis jacent its longitudinal edges with external cement receiving recesses.
2. In a device of the class described, a pin having a wing provided with an opening; a backing plate cooperating with the wing and having an opening; a facing cooperating with the backing plate; and an anchor assembled with the facing and having a bendable prong passlng through the openings and clenched on the wing.

In a device of the class described, a facing having beveled ends; a backing plate provided with flanges cooperating with the beveled ends of the facing, one flange forming a biting tip; a pin having-a wing; and an anchor assembled with the facing and passing through the backing-plate, the anchor engagingthe wing of the pin;
4. As an article of manufacture, a denture pin made of malleable metal, whereby the pin may be-sh'aped from'its interior to conform to the bore wherein the pin is received, the pin belng hollow andbeing slit longitudinally. to form an openingof appreciable width for the reception of cement.
