UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC CULLIN W. REED, OF GHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,072, dated July 30, 1872.
' to be folded upon the top of the cover in a close, rigid, and compact body, so that the said sides and ends when so folded will pre sent a smooth, unbroken surface, whereby the said cover is specially adapted for forming an extension table for the sewing-machine table, the parts being so constructed as to permit of the same being connected to the sewingmachine table with ease and facility. My invention consists in connecting the sides and ends of the cover of a sewing-machine with the top of the cover by a hinged joint in such a manner as to enable the said sides and ends to be folded upon the inside .of the top of the cover, so that, when the several parts are properly adjusted in respect to each other, a smooth, unbroken top surface is presented, whereby an article is produced readily adapted for connecting with a sewing-machine table to form an extension thereof. The invention further consists in connecting or hinging the sides and ends of the cover with the top of the same in such a manner as to permit of the said sides being moved toward or from each other upon the said top to enable them to be changed from a vertical to a horizontal position, and vice versa, to form either the sides of the cover or an extended table for the sewing-machine table, the parts being arranged and adjusted in respect to the endpieces as to form a smooth top surface, a tight or close fitting joint, andat the same time enabling the hinge or joint to be secured and concealed upon the inside in such a manner as to dispense with hingejoints projecting above the top surface of the cover when the parts are horizontally folded upon the inside of the cover to form an extension table for the sewing-machine table. The invention further consists of an extension table formedby folding the sides and ends of a sewing-machine cover parallel with its top, essentially as hereinafter set forth, and adapted to be connected with a sewing-machine table by means of a detachable connection and beveled edges, as more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an inside'view of the sewing-machine cover, showing the side pieces in a horizontal position and the end pieces in a vertical position. Fig. 2 is a section on the line as w of Fig. 1 of one of the end pieces connected by a hingejoint with the top of the cover. Fig. 3 is aview of the cover when folded to form an extension table, the same being shown as connected with the table of a sewing-machine. Fig. 4 is a side view, showing the end pieces, the sides being removed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of Fig. 4, part of one of the end pieces being removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the improved folding cover arranged upon the table of a sewing-machine.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A may designate the top of the cover, which, in outline, may represent any desired form. To the under side of this top, preferably at a suitable distance from the sides and ends, are connected, by a hinge or other suitable joint, the side pieces B B and the end pieces G G, the same being so arranged in respect to each other and to the top of the cover as to be converted by folding with ease and facility from a vertical to a horizontal position,
' and vice versa, for the purpose of forming either a cover for a sewing-machine or an extension table for the bed of the same. The side pieces B B and end pieces (l0 are, in the present instance, connected with the top of the cover by a hinge'orother suitable joint, D, one leaf of which is rigidly attached to the side or end pieces, while the otherleaf or an attachment to it slides or moves within a guide or slotted plate, E, in such a manner as to admit of the side and the end pieces being advanced toward or moved from each other, whereby the said sides and ends can be folded upon the inside of the top of the cover in a close and compact body, the joints fitting closely and tightly together, and their top surfaces rendered flush with each other, whereby a smooth, uninterrupted top surface is produced, the same bein g free from all projections. This smooth, unbroken surface in a folding sewing-machine cover and extension table combined is one of the special features of my invention, and is due to the fact that the hinged joints are concealed, being placed inside of the folding parts, and
therefore do not project above the top surface. The edges d d of the side and end pieces of the cover are beveled or otherwise formed to correspond or coincide with the beveled or other formed edges of the sewing-machine table H, so that when the cover is converted into an extension table the same can be readily attached to the said sewing-machine table in a firm and substantial manner, the parts being preferably flush on their top plane, whereby a smooth, unbroken surface is produced. By forming the edges of the side and end pieces with beveled edges not only can a tight joint be effected, but a neat and attractive appearance is imparted to the several parts when the same are brought together to form a cover for a sewing-machine. This folding cover, when converted into an extension table, is secured to the sewing-machine table by any suitable connection, preferably by a hinge or slide, as designated by the letter F in the several figures, all of which, it will be noticed, are so constructed and connected together as to render them detachable. When the slide is used for securing the extension table in place, I sometimes arrange a spring, G, upon the inside of the top of the cover so as to retain the slide in position when the same is drawn out and inserted in a socket, bracket, or bearing upon the sewing-machine table. When it is desired to employ this cover as an extension for the sewing-machine table the same can, with ease and facility, be converted into such by simply turning down the side pieces B B parallel with the top of the cover, as in Fig. 1, and then moving the end pieces 0 0 toward each end of the top A, by means of the sliding hinge or joint, as in Fig. 2, and folding or turning the same upon the inside parallel with the top of the cover, as in Figs. 4 and 5, when the side pieces are forced toward each other until the edges a a come in contact with the side edges 1) b of the end pieces, whereby tight-fitting joints are secured, and the parts being perfectly flush with each other a smooth top surface will be produced. The parts thus arranged or adjusted will, by preference, be locked down by dowel-pins 0 c, or their equivalents, as shown in Fig. 3, by which means the several parts are firmly and substantially united together, forming an extension table which will always retain and present a smooth top surface, the parts not being liable to separate from each other. When it is desired to convert the extension table into a cover the sides B B are withdrawn from contact with the end pieces, the latter raised to a vertical position as in Fig. l, and each pressed inwardly or toward each other, as in Fig. 4; the side both locking or fastening together the several" parts, both when used as an extension table or as a sewing-machine c'bver 'andare not compelled to be removed from their original position for such purpose. It is evident that the sliding leaf or plate of the hinge or joint may be arranged upon and guided in the end pieces, instead of being arranged upon the inside of the top of the cover, without departure fromthe spirit .of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. The top of a sewing-machine cover having pivoted or hinged .side and end pieces B B and O G, the former folding outwardly and the latter inwardly, to form an extension table for sewing-machine tables, substantially as described. v
2. The end pieces 0 C of asewing-machine cover hinged or pivoted upon the inside of its top, and adapted to be adjusted toward or from each other and be folded upon the inside of the cover, for the purpose specified.
3. The side pieces B B hinged or pivoted upon the inside of the table of the cover, and adapted to be folded outwardly parallel with the top A, and capable of being moved toward or from each other in respect to the end pieces, substantially as described.
4. The end pieces 0 0, provided with stationary dowel-pins c c, or equivalents, for lockin g down the side and end pieces when brought to a horizontal position, to form an extension table, and for securing the said parts together when brought to a vertical position, to form the sides and ends of the sewing-machine cover, substantially as specified.
5. An extension table formed by folding the sides and ends of a sewingmachine cover parallel with its top, essentially such as set forth, and adapted to be connected with a sewing-machine table by means of a detachable connection, F, and beveled edges, 01 d, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of July, 1872.
