UNITED I ,ATES A LOCK.
Tb all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EARNnsr P. GANGEJ WERE, a citizen of the United States, and
V resident of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, haveinvented certain new and useful iImprove-' ments in Locks, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relatesto a lock particularly designed for use upon railway freight cars, and anobject of theinvention is to provide a lock which will act automati cally to lock the doors When the latter is closed.
Another object of the invention to provide a lock for the doors of said cars which is particularly designed for use in connec tionwith the sliding doors and which is comparatively simple in construction, durable and one whichcomprises a car body carried locking bolt normally held in operative position by a spring controlled tumbler and a door carried bolt, which upon projection through the casing of the car body carried locking'mechanism will release the bolt allowing it to falldownwardly through the car door carried bolt for locking the same.
Other objects of the invention will appear 2 in the following detailed description, taken in connection wlth theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of th1s specification,
and in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved lock mechanism, showing the same applied to a door. 1 r i Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the door carried locking boltshowing the manner in which the bolt may be swung backwardly over the door to eliminate any portion there of from projecting beyond the free edge of the door.
Fig. 3 is a section through the car body carried lock and Fig. 4' is a horizontal section through the door carried bolt showing the manner of attaching the same to the door.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary railway freight car which has the usual type of sliding doors, supported and guided by the ordinary type of hangers or guides C. The improved lock mechanism, which is generically indicated by the numeral 1, comprises the door carried structure 2, and the car body carried structure 3 which latter is Specification of Letters Patent.

carried by, the carbody inj close prokimity to the/edge of the door opening.
' The door 'carriedmechanlsm 2 comprises the bolt 4, which has its innerend substantially rectangular in shape and provided wlth an opening as clearly shown in Figs. 1'and2 of the drawings, formingthe rec: tangular open frame 5, from one end of which the bolt 4 projects. The-end of the frame 5 opposite from-the end-upon which the bolt at is formed, is seated in "a recess 6 formed, in an attaching'plate '7. The attaching plate 7 isattached-to the door B of the car by bolts or rivets 8, and these bolts also.
serve to attach the locking bolt 4: to the car.
door B, in that the end 9 of the frame 5 is rockably engaged in the recess 6 permitting the locking bolt to be swung so that itwill extend beyond the edgeof thedoor: or-swung back upon the door as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,.to prevent any portionof the.
mechanism I 2 i from edge of the door. y
The car frame carried mechanism 3 comprises a casing 10' in which is slidably mounted locking, bolt 11. The upper end proj eating beyond the of the locking boltllis reduced, forming a shank 12 which projects out of the upperend of the casing, while the lower end of the locking bolt -11 tapers, .for insertion through-thetapered opening 1 1 formed in the outer fiat end-f150f thebol t 45 and the flattened end 15 is inserted through the open ings 16 and 17 formedfin the sides of the casing 10 near its lower end.. The bolt 11 extends completely through the flat end 15 of the locking bolt/L and through an opening 18 .formed in the bottom of the casing 10, so that when this bolt extends through the opening 14 in the bolt 1, the door B will be held securely in locked position, and the locking bolt 11 will be held against rattling or loose movement.
The locking bolt 11 has a shoulder 19 formed thereupon, which is engaged by the pawl head 20 of the locking tumbler 21. The tumbler 21 is pivotally mounted upon a pin 22, within the casing 3 and a flat spring 24'. engages the tumbler for holding the pawl head 20 in engagement with the shoulder 19 to support the looking bolt 11 in its upward unlocked position. The main body of the tumbler 21 extends downwardly in the casing 10 and is positioned in the path of upstanding lugs 25 which are carried by the flattened end 15 of the locking bolt 4, so that when the looking bolt 1 is inserted through the openings 16 and 17, the upstanding lugs 25 will engage the tumbier 21 and rock the same, moving it into the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and consequently releasin the support of the locking bolt '12, downwardly, under its own weight for insertion through the openings 14 and 18 to lock the bolt 4: in lace.
The outer end of the bolt 4: extends .entirely through the casing 10 and is provided with an opening 26 whi h alineswith an opening 27 formed in an angled bracket 28 carried by the vcasing The alining openings 26 and 27 are provided for receiving the Wire of the ordinary type of seal employed in sealing freight carsl When it is desired to open the door, after the seal hasbeen broken, the bolt 11 is manually lifted out of the al- ining openings 14 and 18, and the door is moved into its open position. Immediately after the bolt 1 has been moved sufiiciently to leave the tumbler 21, the fiat spring 2st will force the tum'bler forwardly, causing the pawl head 20 to enage thefShoulder 19 and support the locking olt 11 in its elevated position.
It will be noted, by particular reference to Fig. 4: of the drawings, are positioned so that they will pass' one upon each side of the lower tapered end of the locking bolt 11 upon the insertion or Withdrawal of the end 15 of the bolt 4 into or from the casing 10.
Changes in details may the made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;
I claim:
1. In a lock, the combination, of a door carried attaching plate, .a locking Abolt pivota'l'ly carried "by said attaching .piate and pro.- vided witha bolt receiving opening near its free end, a frame carried casing adapted to receive said pivoted 'bolt therethrough, a

Washington, D. 0.
gravity actuatedlocking boltfcarried by said casing and adapted for projection through said opening, means for normally holding said gravity actuated loc kingbolt in a raised position, and means carried by said pivoted locking bolt for operating said bolt holding "means to release the gravity actuated bolt upon insertion of the into said casing.
2. In a lock, the combination, of a; door carried bolt, means pivotally supporting said bolt, a frame carried casing, a gravity actu ated bolt carriedby said casing, a spring controlled tumbler normally supporting said gravity actuated ,bolt in an ,upward position, said casing provided with openings adapted to receive therethroug-h said door carried bolt, said door oarried'bolt provided with an opening extending vertically therethrough and lugs formed upon said door carried bolt for engaging said tumbler to rock the latter to permit said gravity actuated bolt to fall for insertion into the opening in said door carried bolt. V
In .a lock, the combination, of a'door carried bolt, means pivotally supporting said bolt, a frame carried casing, a gravity actu ated bolt carried by said casing, a vspring controlled tumbler normally supporting said gravity actuateec'l bo'ltin an u ward position, said casing provided with openings adapted to receive ,therethr'ongh said bolt, said door carried bolt provided with an opening extending Vertically therethrough and lugs formed upon s aid'd-oor-carried bolt for engaging said tumbler to rock the latter to permit said gravity actuated bolt to fall for insertion into the opening in said door carried bolt, a bracket carried by said Ceaspivoted looking bolt ing, the terminal of said door carried boltadapted to extend through said casing and lie in close proximity to said bracket, the projectin .end of said door carried bolt and said brac ct being provided openings to receive a sealwire.
