VV. F. OROURKE.
SASH LOCK.
APPLlcATloN FILED APR. l, 1916.
Patented. Dec. 12, 1916.
WILLIAM F. OROURKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SASI-I-LOCK.
Application filed April 1, 1916.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ORoUnKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Iiocks, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sash locks, and its principal object is to provide means for automatically swinging down into locked position, the locking arm of the sash lock.
This invention has particular reference to that type of sash locks wherein a horizontally pivoted arm is employed on the lock member of the upper sash for swinging down over an upstanding flange on the lock member of the lower sash.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which Figure 1, is a transverse section through fragments of the upper and lower sashI of a window and showing my improved sash lock applied thereto, the sash lock being shown partly in side elevation and partly in section; Fig. 2, is a plan of the sash lock, the window pane of the upper sash being shown in horizontal section, and Fig. 8, is a vertical transverse section through the sash and lock showing the lower sash partly raised.
Referring to said drawing, A, is the upper sash and B, is the lower sash. The upper lock member 10 of the lock has a horizontal plate 11, which is provided for with screw holes for the reception of screws for securing the member to the meeting rail of the upper sash. Projecting up from said plate 11, are two spaced locking arm supports 12, between which is secured the locking arm 13. A transverse pivot pin 14, connects the locking arm 13, with its suipports 12.
The lock member 15, is the one secured to the meeting rail of the lower sash and like the other lock member it has a horizontal plate 16, provided with screw holes for the reception of screws for securing it to the rail. Said member 15, has an upstanding lug 17 located at the dividing line of the meeting rails, which when in locked position is overhung by the lock-ing arm 13.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12,1918..
Serial No. 88,301.
Said locking arm has a member 18, which when in locked position extends up from the pivot pin 14, and from the end of said part 18, is a downwardly inclined part 19, which overhangs the upstanding lug 17; it has a ring portion 20, at its end, which may be taken hold of in swinging the locking arm from its locked position to an unlocked position. The parts thus far described are old and well known, and I make no claim to them separate from the improvements which I have made.
W ith the form of sash lock above de' scribed, it was necessary, after the window had been closed, to pull down the locking arm in order to lock the two members of the sash together. In the present invention, I have provided means upon the lock member of the lower sash for engaging the member 18, ofthe locking arm just as the meeting rails of the two sashes come together, for swinging the locking arm down and over the upstanding lug 17 of the lower sash lock member. This means comprises a locking arm actuating member 21, upon the lower sash lock member 15, which is arranged to engage with a projecting end portion 22, of the part 18, just before the meeting rails reach the closed position of the two sashes (see Fig. 3). Downward movement of the lower sash, past this position will cause the member 21, to strike the end portion 22, and swing the locking arm in the direction of the arrow thereon, thereby swinging over the lug 17, as the two sashes come to their locked or closed position. To unlock the sash the locking arm'is swung back into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 3. The protruding end of the member 21, is rounded off and is spring pressed to permit of its movement past the end portion 22, when the lower sash is raised from its closed position, since otherwise it would engage said end portion and become arrested thereby. For convenience, I have shown the member 21, in the form of a short bolt or pin seated in a recess 24E, in the underside of the lower lock member 15, and spring pressed toward the other lock member by a spring 25, which bears against the end of said recessed portion and against the bolt 21. The latter has a fiange which is pressed against the end of the recessed portion by the spring. In the upward movement of the lower sash, from its closed position, the spring pressed bolt 21, strikes vagainst the end portion 22, and slides back intothe recess as it passes said end portion, the spring returning it to its formerposition directly thereafter. The upper sash lock member 10, hasanupstanding ange 26, (see Fig. 3) upon which the lock arm rests when thrown back, and said flange holds the locking arm in position to be struck by the Yspring pressed member 21, when-the two sashes reach their closing position. j
More or less variation of the exact details of construction are possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact formv of construction shown and described, but intend in the following claims to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A sash lock comprising a lower sash lock member, and an upper sash lock member, said lower sash lock member having an upstanding lug formed with a recess therein adjacent the meeting edges of the sash,
and having also a locking arm swinging member in said recess, said upper sash lock member having a locking arm pivoted thereto on a horizontal pivot parallel with the meeting edges of the sash, and said lockve cents each, by addressing the Washington, I). C.
ing arm having a portion adapted to eX- tend up directly from its pivot which portion terminates in an inclined part adapted to overhang the upstanding lug on the lower sash lock member in locking position when both sashes are closed, but capable of being swung back away from said lug to an unlocked position, said locking arm having also a portion lying in the path of movement of the member of the lower sash lock member; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A sash lock comprising lower and upper sash lock members, the lower sash lock member having an upstanding lug adjacent the meeting edges of the sash, and having a recess in its lower side, a spring pressed member in said recess protruding out through the end thereof adjacent the meeting edges of the sash; said upper sash lock member having a locking arm pivoted thereto on a pivot parallel with the meeting edges of the sash, said locking arm having a part on one side of its pivot adapted to lie in the path of travel of the spring pressed member, when in unlocked position, for the purpose specified, and having a portion adapted to extend directly up from said pivot, which portion terminates in an inclined part that overhangs said lug when in its locked position.
