To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, VFRANK E. VHITE, a citizen of the "United States, residing at New Haven, inthe county of New Haven andf-State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette- Makers and Tobacco-Containers, of which. the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined cigarette maker and tobacco container.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a tobacco container with `means whereby a vcigarette may be easily formed, and in which the cigarette forming device, when not in use, may be confined.

lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same conf sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in theclaims.

In the accompanying drawing, has been illustrated a preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no `limitations are necessarily made to the vprecise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modificationswithin the scope of the claims maybe resorted to when desired.

Referring now to the drawing in'detail in which the reference. characters in the following description denote like parts throughout the 'several views of fthe drawing, the numeral 1, designates a container which may be of any size or shape, although as shown, the container is preferably rectangular as to the length and width, but cross-sectionally it is of oval shape at the sides as at 2. In the container, at one of the sides thereof is arranged the cigarette forming device,

generally designated by the numeral 3. The said device consists of a packing tube 4, which is machined to `provide an opening 5, at the side thereof, the material being ybent outwardly to produce diverging lwalls 6-6 to facilitate the passage of the tobacco from the container 1, to the packing tub'e 4. The upper and lower extremities of the packing tube 4, remain cylindrical. The upper extremity of the tube 4, is designated by the numeral 7, and the lower extremity thereof is designated by the numeral 8. In the upper extremity 7 of the tube is a bushing 9 having a central bore 10. The bushing is of a length equaling that lof the portion 7 of the tube 4. The lower extremity 8, of the packing tube 4, has a guide way or slot 11, with which a notch 12, communicates. A forming tube 13, has provided near its upperend a tongue 14, which is adapted to move in the guide way 11, and it is also adapted toengage in the notch 12,1in a manner and for a purpose yto be presently explained.

When it is desired to form a cigarette, preparatory tothe filling of the paper wrapper, the forming tube 13 is withdrawn from the packing tube 4, by removing the cover plate 15, from over the opening 16, in the bottom wall 17, of the container. The finger of the operator, or a suitable implement, such as a lead pencil, or 'the plunger rod, hereinafter to be referred to, may be inserted in the lower end of the tube 13 to facilitate the withdrawalthereof, or the cover for the container hereinafter also lto be referred to, may be opened and the plunger rod passed therein into contacting engagement with the upper or inner end of the tube 13 or with the tongue 14 that is formed on the said tube, and thus force the forming tube outwardly of the Vpacking tube. The tongue- :packing of the tube 13, I provide a plunger rod 18, having a head 19, thereon. The mentioned plunger rod has of course been removed from within the tube 13, and it is now extended through an opening 20, in a wall 21, of the hingedly mounted cover 22, into the longitudinal bore 10. Tobacco is made to partially fill the packing tube 4, if the tube is not already partially filled. The plunger rod is reciprocated to cause the tobacco to lill the forming tube 13. After the tube 13, has been suficiently filled and packed by the reciprocation of the plunger rod 18, it may be removed by simply turning it to disengage the tongue 14, from the notch 12 to bring the tongue in the guide slot 11 to allow the withdrawal ofthe forming tube from the packing tube.

A paper wrapper or the like may now be wrapped about the tube 13, and pasted; one end of thewrapper may be twisted after which it is onlyv necessary to invert the plunger rod 18, so that the head 19 can be made to enter the tube to eject the packed tobacco from the tube into the wrapper for the finished cigarette. The above described operation may be accomplished from beginning to end without trouble, in fact, it may be accomplished easily and quickly. The removable parts of the cigarette forming device may be assembled for use or disassembled for arrangement within the container.

The cover plate 15, and another cover plate 23, on the wall 21, of the cover 22, confine the parts, which as shown are entirely inclosed when not in use. 'y

It is thought from the foregoing description when perused in connection with the accompanying drwing, that the operation and advantages of the invention will be fully understood without a more extended explanation.

What is claimed as new is 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a container, of a cigarette former including a packing tube secured adjacent one side wall of said container and having a central longitudinal opening communicating with the container, a former tube removable from but slidable in the packing tube, means for locking said former tube to the packing tube when the former tube is partly withdrawn from the packing tube, and a plunger for the packing tube operable eXteriorly of the container and removable fro-m the container, and designed when 1n inoperative position to be received in the former tube, when the latter is wholly received in the packingtube.

2. In a device of the character described, a container, a cigarette former therein, including a packing tube having a central longitudinal opening communicating with the container and having angle sides directed to said opening, a slidable and removable former tube in the packing tube, means for locking said former tube to said packing tube when the former is partly withdrawn from the latter, and a plunger guided when in operative position through one end of the container and packingv tube and arranged for intertting engagement with the former tube when in inoperative position.

In a device for the purpose set forth, a container, a packing' tube therein and arranged to one side thereof, said packing tube having a central opening communicating with the container, and angularly disposed side walls directed to the opening, a bushing in the upper end of the packing tube, a notched slot in the lower end of said packing tube, a former tube having a. tongue thereon designed to pass through the slot and to engage in the notch thereof for holding said former tube in one position with respect to the packing tube, a plunger guided through the bushing of the packing tube when in operative position and arranged for interengagement in the former tube when in inoperative position.

4. In a device of the character described, a container having a closure at the top thereof pro-vided with an opening, said container having its bottom provided with an opening lalining with the opening in the top, cover plates for bot-h of said openings, a packing tube in the container having its bore arranged in Valinement with the said openings, said packing tube being slitted longitudinally and transversely, and the material bounded by the slits bent outwardly to provide angle sides and a central opening, a bushing having a central bore in the upper portion of the packing tube, the lower portion of the packing tube being slotted and having a notch communicating with the slot, a forming tube having a tongue designed to enter the slot and to engage in the notch when in operative position and to pass through said slot to arrange the former tube wholly in the packing tube when in inoperative position, and a headed plunger designed to be guided through the opening in the bushing when in operative position and to have the head thereof interfittingly engaged in the forming tube when in inoperative position.
