i ase en To all whom lit mayconcern. j v
Be it known that I Jo "N B. Anntror, a c1t1zen of the United States, residing atBoston, in the county of Suffolk andrSt ate. of?
Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Ash siftersi,"
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ash Sifters; and especially that type of sifter' designed to be used indoors, in a cellar or'basement. In constructing such sifters itis'essential" that provision be made for preventing dust ,es- 7 caplng during the sifting operation, and also I to allow foreasy'handling of the ashes; and cinders; after the sifting operation been finished. Another important essential is that the sifte'r be of durableconstruction but at the same time inexpensive. While the saving of coal is a leading factor "in'the use of such devices the real 'lnotivefor their use under ordinary conditions is theisavingof money represented by the value of the fuel reclaimed by the siftingprocess. Thereto accomplish the saving for which it is primarily intended; i
I have endeavored to combine all of these essential features in the one device so far as a possible, and have also provided; for 1 the damping of the sifted cinders as when used dry much ash dustcl'ings to them, as is well i known by anyone burning undampened coal cinders,. so that to provide means for preventing escape of dustonly during the sifting process and then to allow the dust collected on the cinders andcarried vby them into the cinder receptacle to escape into the cellar or basement is'to defeat one ofthe main objects of devices of this/type.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described,'
pointed out in the claims, and shown in th accompanying drawings,'inwh1ch:" I
Figurel is a vertical sectronthrough the complete device. a Fig. 2 is a section on'thefline Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a face elevation-of a cinder recep-r tacle, detached from the sifter;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view ofthe sifter.
In the drawings A designates a suitable ash receiving can, barrel, or otherv receptacle provided by theuser, andigon which I Specificationof Letters Patent. Patented A131. 15, 19192 Application filed April '25, 1 18. ,;ser i noi2a0,71o[ i any sifter is designed to rest. flhe sifter consists-of a rectangular-casing 1, of either 7 metal or woodfand provided with a did-2 s'lid'able in'the guideways 3. Outwardmovem ent ofthe lid is' limited by a stop 4-. The casing li'is provided'witha vertical slidable rear panel 5, forming'the rear side ofthe sifter casing, and b'ydrawing this slide up- --wardly'r'eady access is, had to the receptacle A [or 't o thefunder side of the screen frame 6, without removing the sifter' from posi tiong lThe frame 6 carries a suitable mesh screenHG. The casing lhas a flat bottom 8, of larger surface area than the cross sectionof the casing at 'the bottom, and said the ashes falling "through the iscreenwill drop into the-receptacle A. Suitable cleats .8 secured to'theunderside of the bottom 8 At-the'frontthe lower portion of "there, v V 'cepta'cle or casing1is enlarged extende fore if the cost of the sifter is out ofpro-- portion to the value ofthe reclaimed prod: uct inter ms of dollars and cents it fails v Hung on the lower front portion ofthe casing 1 and detachably" connected thereto is a-jcinder box 10.
*Tothe upper side portions of this box I secure false side members 11 which project i over the sides? of the casing 1 and theflower r projecting corners of these .membersare cut out to form shoulders 12.
- These membersalso aid in forming guides beveled'block 14; is carried bythe'bottom of projecting edge or" the base 8 engaging under theshoulderst12of the members 11.- The cinder box is provided withsupportfora slidable cover 1 5Fforthe cinder box. Between the side membersthefront'of; the
cinder box,'which is the'side adjacent the c casing 1, is cut out a-s at 13. A projecting I l v the'casing 1 extending across the opening 9, i V and this block supports the lower end of the i frame 6 and engages the lower edge of the cut out portion 13 of the box 10,'the "front y irfg legs 16 and the bottom is perforated as at 17. Eyes 19 are carried by the sides of theboxand on plates 20 secured to thesides gage the eyes 19 and lock the box 10 to the by the receptacle A.
' In use the parts are interlocked and i of the casing 1 are mounted hooks 21 ,to 'eni ilo q 70' bottom is centrally cut out as at 8 3 that mounted as shown in Fig. 1 and the ashes casing 1,, thereby avoiding spillingthe ashes over the floor on removing the casing.
, When the sifting operation is completed thecinder box is detached and is then supported on the legs 16. Before removing the cinders from the box water can be poured or sprinkled over them,by drawing outwardly the cover 15, and the surplus water instead of accumulating in the bottom of the box with thedust washed from the cinders will drain out through the perforations 17 the legs 16 permitting a drip pan or bucket being inserted under the box.
The cinders" may be kept if desired in the box until used, and the receptacle A removedby itself and emptied. v
The many advantages of a device so con structed Willbe obvious to those who have had occasion to make use of Sifters: of the indoor type. The device can be employed out of doorswhere it will be handy inpreventing ashes 1 blowing over walks, grass plots and upon adjacent; buildings,
After such sifting thecinder box can be readily carriedinto the building and to the place where they are to be burned.
:adjacent the top on one side, side members carried by the box and cut out to form shoulders, a base for the sifter casing adapted to interlock with said shoulders, a
beveled projecting block carried by the casing and projecting into the cinderloox opening, a slidable top for the cinder box, and means for locking the cinder box to the lower portion of the sifter casing.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a casing adapted to rest on and co1nmunicate with a suitable ash receiving receptacle, an inclined screen therein, said casing having an opening at the foot of said screen, a beveled block supporting the lower end of the screen and projecting through said opening, a cinder box, means for 100 ing the, cinder box to the lower portion of the, casing, said cinder box having a side opening, the beveled block of the casing projecting into said opening, projecting vertical side members of the box adapted to overlap the sides of the casing and having their lower corners cut out to form shoulders, and a projecting base for the casing,
